Anyone got HD Freesat yet? (As opposed to freeview or sky)
POSTED BY: guv 2 months, 4 days agoThere was a post a few weeks back regarding the new satellite service from the Beeb and commercial TV channels about to start shortly. The boxes available were just receivers with no recording facilities - but they were HD capable.
There was talk about the EPG potentially having problems on a sky box - or any other receiver, so I was certainly going to wait and see.
Anyway, they have began broadcasting - though ITV are still in test mode (I beleive the official launch will be 1 June) and according to my local sat shop, existing receivers will have no problems with them.
So firstly, you should be able to manually add some of these channels to your sky receiver. (They wont get picked up on the receivers normal searches). And those that have bought (or about to buy) a receiver such as the Technomate 6900, will have a free to air HD system that is capable of all the other goodies that this will bring (including recording - plus of course the countless channels on top of Freesat and sky.)
So has anyone got one a non sky HD receiver that have tried out the broadcasts on 28E yet? And the results and EPGs? From what I was told, the ITV HD broadcast will at first at least, be just simultaneous channels selectable from a "red button" and not a channel in their own right. Sounded like the BBC special events on freesat.

What more will this offer? I can see maybe selling to the folks that haven't got a digital setup but who else? Most have either got a satelitte dish bolted to there house or have a freeview box..Perhaps this is being launched about 5 years to late.. I see lots of questions like 'can I use my exsisting sky dish?' Yes.. But why would you want to replace a receiver with another that others the same service..You can still get BBC HD and the very limited CH4 HD without the £10 HD subscription with the skyHD box.. I'm all for choice but as far as I can see this platforms offers nothing more than the freesat from sky service. I know that ITV HD will be exclusive to the new freesat HD service but for how long? I hope that there will be a serious competetor to sky but don't you think this will just be a round dish v's a square dish all over again? I hope I'm wrong freesat pushes $ky into dropping the £10 HD sub..  Remember this is still early doors. That price will soon be the standard for a PVR version (and no £10 extra sub for that either!). Many people have taken sky purely because their terrestrial reception is poor. I'm guessing they will be definates, along with anyone else that wants HD without being forced to pay a tenner for the facility. |

I'm not sure what you pay for your Sky service - but I bet its more than you would have to pay on Freesat! Remember this is still early doors. All that freesat has at the moment on HD is a very limited BBC and ITV to come which will work interactively through the red button which unless the freesat box is different to the sky box it will not allow you to record onto the hard drive. At the moment if you bought a sky HD receiver independently and used it as a freeview box you would still have more HD choice than freesat . A sky HD box will cost you about £220 ish.. I know this is quite a lot more but it does give you the option of subscribing to sky later if you want to as it would have the card reader and the freesat probably wouldn't.. I do pay sky the £10 sub to watch the 18 HD channels I have got access to. I don't do this because I'm forced to, I do this by choice and I could cancel tomorrow if I choose to. Until freesat offer a better freeview HD service than sky I don't think the 600,000 ish sky HD subscribers will jump ship.. I hope they do offer a good freeview HD package..
