Interview Question

POSTED BY: morris7 1 month, 2 weeks ago

Hey people.

I had an interview for my first post-uni job today. One of the questions i was asked is shown below. Can any of you work out the answer?! Exciting! :)

A train travels from A to B. 1 hour through the journey there is a problem with the engine. The rest of the journey has to continue at 3/5 of the speed. The train arrived 2 hours later than it should have. The captain stated that if they had experienced the engine problem 50 miles later into the journey, they would have arrived 40 minutes earlier.

What is the distance, in miles, between A and B?

The answer is B....anyhow if it takes 2 hours to fix the engine it takes 2 hours to fix the engine, just because you break down somewhere else doesn't mean it will take any less time to fix the engine, unless you so happen to break down outside the depot.

165 miles. It takes 40 minutes to do 50 miles at full speed. Therefore 1.25 miles per minute. so for the first hr it travels 75 miles. if for the next 2 hrs it travels at 3/5 of the speed then it travels at 0.75 miles per minute, so for 2hours that would cover 90 miles. Therefore the total distance is 165 miles?

here is another i was asked:

There are 4 people on a walk. They get to an old rickety bridge that they have to cross. It is only safe for 2 of them to cross at a time. It is also dark and a torch needs to be carried accross and brought back for the next crossing. One of the people is injured and will take 10 minutes to cross the bridge, another will take 4 minutes to cross the bridge, another 2 minutes and the 4th person takes 1 minute.

what is the shortest time that they can all cross the bridge?

18 minutes if the person who can do it in 1 minute takes the torch,

10 mins + 1 min return on first leg
4 mins + 1 min return second
2 mins no return for third leg
