a reputable dealer..
... that's certainly one opinion. The past experience of users here might suggest otherwise!

the new e-520 is on pre-order for £ 600 with just 1 lens. it has a better live view, ( was it needed ? ) like the e-330 system, but for half the price the e-510 is an amazing bargain......

I used to own the e-330, but returned it, as nearly all my shots were blurred.....I couldnt take any handheld shots indoors, without flash , at even 1600 ISO without getting blurry images

with the IS on the e-510 I can get sharper shots than the e-330 , right down to 1/2sec exposure ! and perfectly sharp at say 1/5s. all handheld indoor shots. At 1/10s you can take shots all day long and the IS will ensure they are totally blur free.

I wouldnt buy any camera these days without an IS system, not for allround use anyway.

Having said that, I prefer the look of the e-330. with its viewfinder on the left edge, and flip out screen, but it was a right heavy beast compared to the e-510.

for anyone not needing / wanting the zoom lens, sell them on ebay for £ 80, and you end up having paid just £ 270 for the e-510+14-42mm lens !!!!

NOTES:- I shoot always in RAW mode , and then adjust WB , contrast , highlights on the pc...... I think a lot of people shooting JPG (on any SLR) are getting poor images if the WB isnt set precisely, which it almost never is.... with Raw u can set it afterwards, so u essentially have an electronic negative of the digital image.... the 14-42mm lens has been tested to be at its peak sharpness at 35mm and F8 , thus I always just use A priority mode, set it to F8 and zoom to 35mm unless I really need a wider angle. have got some great results on this sub £ 500 package........ I think too may people are buying into brand names , and then setting the cameras on auto, shooting as JPGs and ending up with shots that couldve been better taking on a compact with a little know how...... I also find it funny how some people think that brand A is the best, or brand B is, when they dont know how to take a pic unless they use the auto mode......nothing wrong in auto modes, but its not a platform to start judging which cameras are better than others (!)

Im quite new to SLRs and have been stunned by how so many people are focused on brand names, rather than overall quality....... It may just be in the UK ( ? ) as the E-510 was the best selling camera ( in its class ) in europe last year.

I agree with alot of what you say, but just need to mention a couple of things: Olympus is a brand name, but I assume you're talking about Canon and Nikon. Also, the Canon 400d IS the best selling DSLR. Period (and in the UK, the 2nd best selling camera overall for last year!). I don't know about Europe or "in it's class", but this is echoed in the US too (Canon and Nikon pretty much having the top 9 spots with the Sony Alpha 100 in 10th).

Personally, I think the liveview on this camera does need an update because the lag on it really gets annoying, but that said for the money: It's a very good camera and the twin lens pack gives pretty useful range too.

Voted hot.

This is a fantastic camera. Don't take my word for it, look on dpreview or steves-digicams and for more examples go to flickr and search or E510 pics. I paid nearly twice this price for it last year and am still delighted with it.

I know nothing about this retailer so can't comment either way.

This is incorrect - the E-520 does not have a liveview system like the E-330, the only camera on the market that does is the is the Sony A3x0 series. The problem with liveview in SLRs is that to open the main sensor and drive the screen from there as most compact and bridge cameras work, you need to raise the mirror which in turn disables the camera's phase detect autofocus and auto-exposure systems. This means to focus the camera needs to clumsily drop the mirror, focus and then raise the mirror back or use the slow contrast detect method where the focus is determined from the image on the sensor. The E-510 has to drop the mirror for its autofocus in liveview, the E-520 can use contrast detect AF which isn't much of an advantage due to the slow speed.

The E-330 used a different implementation for liveview, while it could drive the screen from its main sensor as many cameras do it also had a second camera sensor mounted in the viewfinder chamber. Using this screen to drive the live preview meant that the mirror could stay down which in turn allowed the camera to use its high speed phase detect autofocus and could take pictures without additional mirror flips. Sony have followed a similar approach by fitting a tilting mirror in the viewfinder chamber, when liveview is enabled the mirror moves and directs light to the second camera sensor instead of the viewfinder which again allows the camera to function as if it was using the viewfinder.

The main benefit of the E-520 over the E-510 is the new sensor rather than the updated liveview system although currently the E-510 dual lens kit is well worth going for - the Olympus kit lenses are pretty much the best of any kit lens and with IS in body it means the full 28-300mm range is stabilised.
