imho the a200 is better than the d40 - in so many words it has far more features namely image stabilization in the body which means it's far cheaper to upgrade lens.

the extra megapixels (yes i know it doesn't mean better quality) means you've got more options to crop etc post processing and still get a decent print out of it.

there's a healthy range of reasonably priced 2nd hand lens for the minolta mount (which works on sony) abeit probably less than what nikon has.

FYI There's a great lens called the 'beercan' 70-210mm f4 which you can find on ebay for around £100

i was looking at the d40 but have been put of by the fact that the lens has to have the autofocus motor as its not part of the body, does the sony have autofocus in the body, I want a telephoto lens (300mm) which makes the d40 very expensive!
