EXPIRED - No time restrictions on the use of the 16-25 Railcard

£24.00

161°

FOUND BY: distilledchill 1 year, 1 day ago

STARTS: 01/07/2008   EXPIRES: 31/08/2008

During July and August there are no restrictions / minumum fares on the use of the 16-25 Railcard before 10AM so you can use this to get money off the tickets for morning commuting!

If, like me, you can't buy a weekly, this can quickly save you a fortune - with up to 33% off train tickets . Of course, it could even be a better saving than some weekly / monthly tickets... its worth working it out, for £24 you can get quite a bit of money off.

I am trying to book a morning ticket through nationalrail.co.uk and it doesn't seem to take this into account. Am I doing something wrong or is it not automatic?

Works for me - 15.50 down to 10.25 - you have to click on young person's at the bottom of the screen when shown the times before you go through to fares.

Of course, it can depend on your train line but...

Different train operating companies have different rules for deciding which tickets can be discounted with railcards. Virgin very generously allow you the 33% off first class advance tickets which usually means that a first class single, complete with a drink and a bite to eat costs less than a cheap day single on many trains

When trying to get a good deal on train tickets, look at national express east coast's website. They can sell tickets for any train operator, and their web interface makes it nice and easy to find the good deals on advance tickets

The minimum fair on a YP Railcard is £8 for a single or £16 for a return on the commuter train. I know the £8 is correct, but I think the woman on the train made up the £16 thing.

Yes, the £16 is correct (I sometimes buy tickets at £20.50 which get reduced to £16 before 10 and slightly less after 10.

July / August though - this doesn't apply (as per my post).

Thansk!

Excellent! Getting a 5-year railcard was the best freebie my bank ever gave me.

there is no higher rate of min fare during july and august student break period

For all journeys made at or before 10am Monday to Friday, a minimum fare applies (except in July or August, or on public holidays). This applies to all tickets except the Off-Peak Day Travelcard (All Zones only) which has separate minimum fare conditions.

The minimum fare is either £8.00 or £16.00 depending on the type of ticket being purchased. Most will be £8.00, but the following ticket types have a minimum fare of £16.00: Standard Day Returns, Standard Open Returns, European Open Returns.

For example: If an undiscounted Single ticket costs £8.50 and the normal 1/3 saving makes the fare £5.60, you will have to pay the minimum fare of £8.00.

If an undiscounted Standard Open Return costs £27.00, then you will get the full 1/3 saving as the discounted fare of £17.80 is higher than the £16.00 minimum fare.

If you travel regularly before 10am, then a weekly or monthly season ticket may be more appropriate (Railcard discount on these tickets not applicable).

Off-Peak Day Travelcards (All Zones only):
Before 10am Monday to Friday (except in July or August, or on public holidays) the minimum fare is £8.00. At and after 10am on Monday to Friday and as advertised on Saturdays, Sundays, Public Holidays and during July and August the minimum fare is £4.80.

"No restrictions"? So you don't have to be between 16 and 25?
