Spam & Expired (How to use properly)

POSTED BY: thesaint 1 year, 4 months ago

Hot on the heels of my number one thread "Buddy/Ignore list" comes this thread to guide you to the proper way of using these buttons.

Please be aware of how you use these buttons, it is important.

Firstly, the Spam button.

The Spam button is basically a button that removes a thread from the forum. It is not deleted, only removed to a place where only the moderators and Admin can see it.

One member can not spam a thread by themselves, it takes at least two members with full voting power to remove a thread from the forum.

You should only spam a thread if you believe it to break HUKD's Code of conduct, or if it is a duplicate thread.
It is not to be used to remove threads that you happen not to agree with. There are times when threads can be spammed that do not fit either of these criteria, but best leave that to the professionals.

If you see a thread that you wish to be spammed, press the button. You can also write a post in the thread that you have spammed it, and also the reason why, but it is not mandatory. It is best to write it in the thread though because then this is a call for others to do the same, as it can't be removed with just your pressing of it.

Secondly, the "Expire" button.

The "Expire" button is for when a deal posted is no longer available. It will then preface a thread title with the words "Expired".

An "Expired" thread can not be "Spammed", so please ensure that you are making the correct decision when pressing the "Expire" button. This is especially important when abusive threads are made. It is then only when a moderator is made aware of the thread that it can be removed. I have seen some very unpleasant threads posted that have been mistakenly "Expired" that have remained for a long time because they have been "Expired" and not "Spammed".

When a thread is "Expired", you can post on it as normal. If the thread is in the "Deals" forum, you will no longer be able to vote on it.

These buttons have different uses across the forum.

This a general overview of these buttons. If you are unsure about whether to use them, the best thing to do is report the post, and let a moderator make a decision.

Thanks Thesaint- it is frustrating when members expire threads which are duplicates etc- if you come across a thread which is a duplicate or offensive then it's best to spam then hit the report button too so we can remove it quickly

Gee thanks, I don't think your moment of common sense will prevent you from still spamming threads in the future though.

Is it me or is this just slightly hypocritical?
Half your post count is due to the comments - Spammed!

Good post and very useful, but how many people are going to read it?
After the initial comments this thread will be relegated to the depths of misc - it would be useful to have this kind of info as a 'sticky'.

So, without threads like this, how are you supposed to know to click "Spam" for a duplicate thread? I can see why people would logically think to expire it...

Why don't you get admin to change it to "Spam / Report Duplicate" or something like that, as this thread will soon disappear off the page, and we'll all be none the wiser again... (that's if the majority of people even venture into the Misc area...)

I suppose there is a genuine use, like when someone posts a "Help" thread, and they get it resolved. They can write it in the thread, and it may be overlooked and someone else spends a lot of time searching for them only to post it and it was already solved.

I do agree that it does more harm than good in "Misc".

HUKD doesn't have "Stickies" anymore, it would be good if a mod re-wrote it and my previous banger(Buddy/Ignore), and added it to the side bar in the Forum Index.

Was going to suggest something like this, most members wouldn't know where to click for a duplicate, make the spam button a spam/duplicate button. Also why can a thread not be spammed when it's been expired, can we not change the system so we can still spam a thread if people have (maybe mistakenly) expired it?

Talk about rep begging but what the hell have some for a great post
Please no Rep needed in this thread, I have been told that I am steadily climbing up the rep table, if I posted in the "Congrats" threads, I believe I would be perched high on top.

Then maybe its time for admin to sort out the expired from the spammed, maybe keep the expire but allow it to still be spammed, i think a fair few have latched onto the expire so it cannot be removed
