Groceries Deals

POSTED BY: lawrenzini 5 months, 2 weeks ago

Can Groceries Deals please be excluded from the front page?

I spent a while the other night customising my settings so I could avoid them however they keep on appearing. I think that the vast majority of them are a waste of time for the following reasons:

- It is uneconomical to make a designated journey just to pick up a low value item.
- The cost of fuel/time renders most of them pointless.
- Supermarkets run deals to sell product - they are usually at the end of every isle in the place in big piles with big signs advertising the deal. You would need to be blind to miss them.
- Most supermarkets run the same deals 365 days a year, I cannot remember a single time I have been to a supermarket where there hasn't been a deal on Coke/Pepsi.
- The same group of people seem to vote every groceries deal hot. They then go onto an 8 page discussion about how much they love said product and how they are going to buy 500 jars and have a bath in it etc etc...
-I joined this site because the MSE deal boards got clogged up with really poor deals on groceries - making it hard to spot good deals and a waste of time. It would be a shame to see this go the same way.

I tend to check this site at least 5 times a day, I like to have a quick scan of the first few pages as I have a few purchases in mind that I am looking/waiting for a deal on. Having to plough through pages of groceries deals is making this laborious.

You should be able to exclude them with the custom tab, no?

Well as a single person trying to make ends meet I find them helpful, whereas I think tonnes of x box 360 games deals are worthless to me but you won't hear me complaining! You have the heat button to vote it cold if you don't agree it is a deal and you can customise your settings to try and limit the offending 'deals' what more do you want?

I think these two points are the same?

I don't shop at a particular supermarket, so will often choose the Supermarket that has an offer on that I want to pick up, whether this be Tesco,Sainsburys, Asda or Morrisons.

I don't think anyone goes to a supermarket just to pick up a pack of Muller Corners, but many then know to look out for them whilst there.

Everyone has their "favourite" type of deal on this site - not eveyone is looking for a 10 ft plasma television or the best deal at argos, but this is why this site is popular.........you never know what going to be posted on here, and to me thats half the fun! Some of the conversations on here are soooooooo funny. All I want to say is a big THANKYOU to all who post on here, whatever it is. LONG LIVE HOTUKDEALS!

A deal is hot if it represents a significant saving, otherwise it is just "good shopping". If someone can save £10-20 on an xbox game then it is worthwhile. If there was a deal for a pram (which I have no interest in) with a £50 saving I would say it is a good deal. However 2 for 1 on dolmio doesn't fall into this bracket.

All supermarkets have offers on, often these are dictated by the suppliers looking to boost sales or raise awareness. If you have little brand preference it is realistic to expect that every supermarket will have a deal on X product. If it's beer - one may have a 3 for 2 on Becks and another on Kronenberg. As outlined in my first post, it's not like the supermarket's hide their deals - quite the contrary infact.
Just to add - A number of my friends use this site and everyone I have mentioned this to has also had the same frustration. I have often suggested this site to people over MSE which is full of dross. Ultimately, I may as well voice my issues with things for them to be taken into consideration. Whether or not anyone takes any notice is another matter. I'm not going to make any childish statements like "I'm sick of them and i'm never coming back". However it is realistic that I, and people in the same position as me will use the site less if the trend continues.
Obviously, it may be the case that there are millions of people interested in supermarket deals and it is therefore benificial to have a site focussed around them.

Woah. If an XBox game was £40 and it's £10 off, then that's only 25% off.

If a supermarket item is 2 for 1 then that's 50% off.

Talk in percentages rather than "saving".

So if something is 10p reduced to 1p then it's a 90% saving, but it's alot of effort to save 9p. The deals that are worth having are the ones that save some real money, not 9p!

But if you bought enough of them...

Besides, a 50% saving on anything in the supermarket these days is pretty high.

Yes, point I'm making is that the £ is the important bit, not the %. You could have great % but low £ makes it not worth the effort.

So you wouldn't buy something that you liked if it was reduced by 90% if it only saved you 9p?
