Only when running Vista and a DX10 game. In XP there's not a huge difference, and XP dosen't do DX10.

Do not believe the hype about this being as good for high-end gaming, but this is still a good price for a 8600 equivalent. No where near equivalent to a 8800.

Here you go http://www.shop.bt.com/productview.aspx?quicklinx=4YRJ
Performance per £ for a silent card it is hard to beat. (remember Quidco)

I used the pre overclocked version of the xfx 7900gs card for a year. it was very good, played crysis on a mixture of low/med settings, scored @ 5600 in 3dmark06
I bought the cheap asus 8800gs off ebuyer last week, now sold out, and it gets @ 9800 pts on 3dmark06.
have not tried any games yt as only installed 2 days ago

the 7900gs is a great card for that price, but it was much noisier and much hotter than the 8800gs
I would not buy a 7900gs at current prices, instead look for a 512mb versions of 3850 @£65, or look for a 8800gs @£70 if funds do not stretch to a £90 8800 gt or a £112 4850

you pays your money and takes your choice

Yes it will play high def great, I had one and used it for that very purpose.

Note though that the fan is very noisy on these and mine ran at 100% all the time. Very annoying indeed.

No way to turn it down. not with rivatuner, speedfan or by flashing the bios.

Only a problem with xfx version IIRC.

So in summary, good performance for the price but very noisy. Needs an aftermarket cooler really, at extra cost.....

This is an old high-end card. i.e. high power draw, lots of heat and a fan. For HTPC use a low end new card like a 3450 or an 8500GT is a much better choice, especially if you get a passive one with a big heatsink instead of a fan, unless you want gaming performance as well.

I have a 7800gt in my mums media centre and is fine for all her games, but useless for high def films. It seems I should have put one of the HD 38xx cards in their or a newer Nvidia to help HD playback. At the moment its pure processor power performing the playback.
