Avoid Ryanair Card Fees with a Barclays Gift Card

£3.00

242°

FOUND BY: rk1 11 months, 1 week ago

Sorry, not sure if this is posted in the right section or if something similar has been posted before.

Basically; for those of us that do not have an electron card the fees for booking a Ryanair flight are huge!

However there is a way round this. Barclays issue Electron gift cards (that can be ordered online) for a flat fee of £3. You can top up to £300 on it and use at any retailer that accepts electron, inluding online. Therefore if you are a regular Ryanair passenger simply purchase one of these cards and then use it to book flights - works out a lot cheaper!

The information contained in this table summarises key product features and is not a replacement for the full terms and conditions

Usage Restrictions Use of the card may be restricted for some transaction types, e.g. gambling and automated fuel dispensers.
Replacement Fee £3.00.
Transaction Fees Use of the card in a currency other than Sterling will be subject to a charge of 2.75% of the transaction value.
The daily Visa exchange rate will be used to convert the transaction back into a Sterling amount.

A good suggestion

An alternative is to open a basic account that offers an electron card. If like me you do so with the same bank that you have your current account (if you have one), then they can be managed online with the same log in. This also gives the option of immediate transfers between accounts.

I've just heard Simon Caulder talk about this on BBC Breakfast and he said that the no fee for Electron is only a TEMPORARY offer. Make the most of it while you can!

Better suggestion - just avoid Ryan Air all together. They're the bottom of the barrel and just take the **** with hidden charges.

Best value airline going. Even with the luggage charges they are best value. People should try harder to travel light & go with cabin luggage only.

Shame that I booked a ryanair flight last night! Still hot though!

Couldnt quite believe the £16 for paying by a non-electron card and £32 to take one bag of hold luggage between 2 of us!

Does the Travelx cash passport electron card not work for Ryanair transactions?
As far as I know the only fees you are charged is if you use an ATM machine

But aren't we forgetting what a scam this really is on these 'charges' - the credit card companies probably charge Ryanair at most 1% - ie 40p on a £40 one way flight and Ryanair charge how much - £4? for paying by card - a nice 10x markup. Makes you wonder if all the other so called 'taxes and charges' are seeing a similar level of mark up.

Finally I would be surprised if Ryanair get rid of having a free way to pay as at that point there is no option but to pay this charge and thus under EC law it would have to be included in the basic ticket price - I am sure this is the only reason for the cheaper electron price.

On average credit/debit card charge approx 2.5% of the total, but your right about the healthy mark up, its like them calling their charges "tax" which is nonsense, however even with all of these charges you're still gonna struggle to find a cheaper way of flying.

all the best

I think that you will find that Debit Cards incur no charge to the retailer, Credit Cards certainly do.

Debits cards do incur a charge to the retailer but it is much lower than that for a credit card (it is typically a pence per transaction charge rather than a %). I would have guessed that Ryanair would be paying no more than 10p a transaction for debit cards.

Also when we flew with them a few weeks ago the hen party in front of us were in tears because they all had to pay £30 each for going 2KGs over their stingy 15KG allowance!!!!!! so beware of that!
