Nice deal - thanks. You do need to read the Amazon reviews before you decide whether to buy, though.

The reviews are dire.

COLD

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't touch it!, 12 Jan 2008

I had this less than 1 year and had only been using it occasionally for very light use before it broke down. I won't be buying any more Swordfish products.

5.0 out of 5 stars Swordfish 500DC Diamond-cut Shredder, 30 Jun 2008
By Mr. Ian M. M. Stewart "Ian" (Crieff, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have found this to be an excellent little shredder. Compact and efficient, it is ideal for home and small office use, and the diamond cut is ultra-secure.

From the engineering viewpoint close inspection of the mechanism is encouraging - well designed and well made. I do NOT ask it to eat umpteen sheets of paper all at once, nor do I feed it very heavy material.

In other words I treat it with the care which befits its size, and I oil it regularly with Swordfish lubrication sachets. I am more than satisfied with it in every respect.

To be fair, when Which? tested this shredder they found it OK, and rated it a Best Buy:

This Swordfish shredder is a simple but robust medium-sized model.

It is fairly versatile and quick at destroying paper, so should meet the shredding needs of most families.

This shredder can destroy up to eight sheets at once and hold up to 70 pages - and there's a window to check out how full the bin is getting.

This model is easy to operate and empty, and also clear blockages with the help of its reverse gear.

Towards the end of our 1,000 sheet durability test, this shredder was working as well - we lubricated the blades every 250 pages as the manufacturer recommends.

This is a quick and durable shredder and blockages are easy to clear

Paper only, though, unlike some of the Swordfish models.

Which is why I said I don't trust the Amazon reviews!!! It's about as good as the reviews on here. There are so many deals that are voted cold because someone doesn't like the size/colour or believes everything they read on the internet. Also there are so many people on here that have deals flagged up if it contains the word 'Lexmark' JUST so they can vote it cold.

Therefore, it may not be your cup of tea because you prefer industrial size shredders and probably own your own waste site as well but to some people this will be a good deal and they might miss out because you voted it cold based on a COMPLETE STRANGERS review. For all you know they could have tried to shove a pizza box through it and got annoyed that it broke.

To conclude - why trust reviews on Amazon.

You make a fair point.
But if a number of people post reviews all pointing to a similar fault, it can only be fair to say that the particular fault is a prevalent one for that product.

If you rely on one review though then agreed, you are being slightly naive!

The 'good' Amazon reviewer boasts of oiling it regularly and treating it with due care. The 'bad' reviewers say they were not using the shredder regularly so maybe needed to be oiling it at every use rather than every 250 sheets?
