Cold, you can get the 4G non-surf that has a webcam and upgradable memory for £10 cheaper from ebuyer.

They're pretty good, the screen resolution is a bit small, they don't have bluetooth and the battery life is only a couple of hours but there's nothing comparable at the price and it's still very usable.

STONE COLD

It is the Surf model so it has no webcam.
Plus as said PiXmania is only £9 more for the non surf model
Plus at Pixmania it is available now and they charge less postage

I would vote hot if it was not a 'one day' price.
If you want it for certain, now, want the better model with the built-in camera just stump up the extra £7.50.

It's £154.37... If you saw it at £190 I guess it was one of ebuyer's price swings.

Linux isn't a single operating system, it comes in lots of flavours. There's a demo of the default interface of the eee's operating system here (slightly out of date, there have been more apps added recently. The poor picture quality isn't there on the eee either).

i'm using linux (ubuntu) at the moment. decided to give it a try and put it on my laptop a week ago. suppose i've learned a fair bit in that time. put it on so basically my children can have an inkling about different OS's that are out there cos i think their schools are exclusively windows.

not a bad OS - i'm going to stick with it for a while. boots up quite quick and automatically links to my router really well. hope this helps.

if i was going to get a netbook there is no way i'd pay over the odds for xp to be on it.

Linux is great although you do need to have a little knowledge of what youre doing to install stuff. On this machine there is an interface to make things easier for the novice (it can be unlocked with a simple code tapped into the command prompt). However for a new user who wants to install new programs they may find it difficult to get to grips with. It's not meant as a regular machine though so thats why it comes with most applications you would want to use.

For DVD's forget it - it has no optical drives. You can play divx and xvid movies no problem so you could convert your DVDs to these formats and play from memory stick and it would work fine. Or plug a DVD external drive in and use that (although then you would have to install DVD reading software). For people who know Linux this would be fairly straight forward but if youre new to Linux youd probably think it was more trouble than its worth. IMO.

I used to have one of these machines and they are really good but for what theyre designed for, browsing the net, getting your email etc, messing around on You Tube.

There are four models in this range: 2G Surf, 4G Surf, 4G and 8G. The Surf models lack the webcam. All the higher ranges (eee 900, 901, 1000 etc.) have webcams.
