Toshiba Satellite U300-15P (13.3" "ultra-portable") £599.91 in-store @ Staples

£599.91

-14°

FOUND BY: megalomaniac 1 year, 2 months ago

STARTS: 14/09/2008

Toshiba state the price as £849.00, so that's quite a saving.

It comes with a free case (worth £19.99), free 2GB Kingston memory stick (worth £9.99) and free backup software with one year subscription to online storage (worth £49.99).

This deal was spotted in-store at Staples in Sheffield.
It doesn't appear to be available online, but I assume it's the same price at other Staples stores.

Specification:
Intel® Core2 Duo Processor T7700 2.4GHz
WiFi Link 4965AGN network connection and Intel® GM965 Express chipset
2,048 (1,024 + 1,024) MB DDR2 RAM (667 MHz) (maximum expandability: 4,096 MB )

What's with the cold votes then guys? How can a £249.09 saving plus a hat full of freebies not be a hot deal?

Yes Dells are, that kinda was my point - Dell gets a lot of love round these parts.

Same spec maybe, but same spec in a lightweight 13.3" and a top brand like Toshiba? I can't find any, in-fact anything with a 13.3" and 2.4GHz Core2Duo processor on the likes of laptopsdirect.co.uk and ebuyer.com etc. seems to be around £800........

brilliant laptop, good price.

I think the problem is that with the real launch of netbooks theyve killed off the UMPC and 13" laptop market..

People these days want a 9/10 inch laptop or a 15/17 inch but not in between lower or higher..

So no reflection on yourself, I think this is a good deal but would stick to my Advent 4211 (MSI Wind) instead based on price and portability..

Good processor. Decent spec. Nice-looking machine. But for this price point, I'd have expected a dedicated graphics card. Plus there was a similar Toshiba UMPC posted (but only 1.66GHz C2D) on Bargaincazy this morning for £250 less.

You mean this one: http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/24371...-113-1-66hz-t/

2.4GHz Core2Duo vs 1.66GHz
4MB cache Vs 2MB
800MHz FSB vs 667MHz
2GB RAM vs 1GB
250GB HDD vs 120GB
etc. etc.

Hardly comparing like with like......For the difference in spec you'd expect a big price difference. Yet that deal made it to 38, and this one's stuck in the -ve's, Ok so the gpu isn't great, but then they never are on ultra portables - and not forgetting that no-one's managed to produce a laptop at a similar spec for the same or less. I'd say this was a case of folks not voting on the deal itself but thinking "I can get one for £300", cos ya know a 1.0 litre Ford Fiesta is totally the same as a 1.6 and doesn't cost any more......right???

Sounds logical and I'd say you were right if it wasn't for the fact that I was dragged round Nottingham the other day looking at these and everywhere had virtually sold out of 13.3"s (Particularly Sonys) and 13.3" cases seemed to be like rocking horse poo.......apparently the students off/returning to uni are buying them by the bucket load.

Hardly any smaller than a "standard" notebook, so why pay for much for so little?

haha my bro bought a 15" R60+

I wouldve thought students would go for the £300 mark..

Im thinking more along the lines of theres less demand for 13" so they produce less & therefore looks like there are less out there..?

Im not so sure, i have a 12" advent 8212 and love the screen size. any smaller would be too small, but bigger would be non portable (meaning 15/17, 13" would be fine).
However, looking at this i would probably go for the advent 4401, which has dedicated graphics but admittedly a slower processor and hard drive, although is only £380.
If this had been out when i bought my current laptop (for £600) i would have opted for it, but i suppose that what difference a year makes...
