At first glance HP are more expensive than Epson, but HP have a big advantage where the print heads are on the cartridge - i.e. they are replaced every time you buy a new cartridge - and so you don't get the ever so wasteful problem of printer head cleaning that you so often get with Epson.
IMHO Epson printers are so designed that they probably won't work much longer than 18 months without servicing.
My mum just sprayed a whole set of cartridges all over the inside of her Epson, 'cos tech support kept telling her to clean her print heads. Turned out that some tubes became detached - so ink had nowhere (paperwise) to go.
Common problem reported on Epson forums.
Cheaper to buy a new printer than repair.
Suggested self repair solutions require using surgical instruments like long forceps and squirting cleaning fluid into thin tubes with a needle loaded syringe.
I'm on my second HP printer and my mum has had 2 Epsons. My printer experience has been virtually perfect, whereas my mum's has been an absolute pain.
