Haggle:
The Railcard scheme is great but also inequitable, as well as that there's a few anomalies in the entire scheme it badly needs an overhaul. For example, we live in an age where it's not acceptable or legal to discriminate on the basis of family status, gender, etc... but the Family and Friends Railcard does this openly. That should be changed, the requirement to have a child with you is not just discriminatory it's silly. As is the Senior Railcard were I am amazed the discount does not extend to the partner/spouse or travelling companion of the card holder. Whereas the Network Railcard allows up to 4 people to avail of discounted travel together using just one Network Railcard. That's completely inexplainable when those over 60 are most likely to travel with someone else, especialy those in need of assistance or care. National Rail need to overhaul this card scheme as soon as possible to reflect the modern society and remove unnecessary restrictions for older people.
You say we aren't allowed to discrimate on basis of 'family status, gender, etc', but that card doesn't do any of these things. The card allows up to four people the right to travel cheaply as long as they have a child travelling with them effectively.
What you then went on to say is how it discrinates against old people, which doesn't add up. As long as the senior citizens are willing to also travel with a child, they are entitled to get this card and have just as much right as everyone else to use this card and travel with it under these rules.
There isnt any way to remove restrictions for older people, when there aren't restrictions on them in the first place. If anything, they get
better treatment than most adults because they have the option of getting a senior pass without the need to take a child along with them just to get the rates. Like I said, whether you're 35 or 80, you have the same right to buy this card and travel with the discount as long as you take a child. However if you're aged 80 and want to travel alone, you can simply use a seniors card for a discount, what do 35 year olds get?
Although I fully agree that elderly people need to be given more help and support in this world than they recieve, in this situation this isn't the case. They have their own discount card, and aren't restricted from getting this family and friends card either, meaning they have more choice than anyone.
If you live within Greater London and are a senior you have free travel on any means of public transport 24/7 if you apply for a free pass. Technically it's the current working people like ourselves who's taxes who are paying for them to travel free, but you don't hear me complainng
