1. Am I eligible to use a Family & Friends Railcard?

To be eligible to use a Family & Friends Railcard, your group must consist of at least one named card holder and one child (5 -15 years of age). The named card holder must travel with any accompanying passengers for whom discounted tickets are purchased for the entire

The Young Person card allows anyone 16-26 a discount of 33% off their fare. Can't be used at peak times.

Family & Friends also allows 33% off, can't be used at peak. The main reason this card is popular is because it allows up to four adults and four children to travel with just one card, whereas the Young Person is just for yourself. The only catch is that you have to have a child aged 5-15 in order to qualify for the cheap tickets, and obviously if an adult split up and went their own way and got asked to prove they had the card they'd be stuck, so you always have to travel together.

The Railcard scheme is great but also inequitable, as well as that there's a few anomalies in the entire scheme it badly needs an overhaul. For example, we live in an age where it's not acceptable or legal to discriminate on the basis of family status, gender, etc... but the Family and Friends Railcard does this openly. That should be changed, the requirement to have a child with you is not just discriminatory it's silly. As is the Senior Railcard were I am amazed the discount does not extend to the partner/spouse or travelling companion of the card holder. Whereas the Network Railcard allows up to 4 people to avail of discounted travel together using just one Network Railcard. That's completely inexplainable when those over 60 are most likely to travel with someone else, especialy those in need of assistance or care. National Rail need to overhaul this card scheme as soon as possible to reflect the modern society and remove unnecessary restrictions for older people.

Yeah. I have a network railcard and when I talked to my OAP mother in law about it she was well miffed. The only benefit to the OAP one is that you can buy first class tickets with it. Not exactly a bonus. The network railcard is £20 well spent (though I don't know if there is a version outside of the South East).

You say we aren't allowed to discrimate on basis of 'family status, gender, etc', but that card doesn't do any of these things. The card allows up to four people the right to travel cheaply as long as they have a child travelling with them effectively.

What you then went on to say is how it discrinates against old people, which doesn't add up. As long as the senior citizens are willing to also travel with a child, they are entitled to get this card and have just as much right as everyone else to use this card and travel with it under these rules.

There isnt any way to remove restrictions for older people, when there aren't restrictions on them in the first place. If anything, they get better treatment than most adults because they have the option of getting a senior pass without the need to take a child along with them just to get the rates. Like I said, whether you're 35 or 80, you have the same right to buy this card and travel with the discount as long as you take a child. However if you're aged 80 and want to travel alone, you can simply use a seniors card for a discount, what do 35 year olds get?

Although I fully agree that elderly people need to be given more help and support in this world than they recieve, in this situation this isn't the case. They have their own discount card, and aren't restricted from getting this family and friends card either, meaning they have more choice than anyone.

If you live within Greater London and are a senior you have free travel on any means of public transport 24/7 if you apply for a free pass. Technically it's the current working people like ourselves who's taxes who are paying for them to travel free, but you don't hear me complainng

I'm saying the Family and Friends Railcard discriminates on the basis of family status, martial status and perhaps on gender as well. Because the discount it provides is only available to those travelling with children. They are most likely to be people who are married, and have a family that includes children. It's also s silly restriction, even for families with children. What about parents who have to visit sick children in hospitals sometimes miles away, when they will not have their child with them. Should they be penalised and be unable to avail of discounted fares because their child is ill and unable to travel with them? There's a simple solution to this. It's to remove the stipulation to have any children travelling with you. The card should enable the purchase of discounted tickets for adults and also children travelling with them, if any.

I'm saying the terms of the Senior Railcard means it effectively discriminates against older people many of whom need to have someone travel with them, it's not an option for them. Therefore they (or their travelling companion/spouse/partner) have to buy a full price ticket, we cannot assume the person they're travelling with is also over 60 they may not be. Besides even if they were they have to pay for another Senior Railcard. Looking at the entire range of Railcards available there are 2 other cards that have far more generous terms in that they allow the purchase of up to 4 discounted tickets with just one Railcard, It's clearly not fair, equitable or reasonable to have stricter terms for the one section of rail travellers under the Railcard scheme. Again the solution is simple, allow the card to include the purchase of discounted tickets for the card holder and their partner/spouse or travelling companion travelling with them.

I see your point, but a discount is designed as an incentive. If everyone was entitled to the same level of discount regardless of age, gender, marital status etc, then they may as well just drop their prices by 33% and do away with all that.

It's only seen as unfair because the senior citizen is given a discount and the extra person travelling with them isn't. At the same time if nobody was given a discount and all people paid the same rate, there would be nothing to complain about even though in that situation you'd actually be paying more. Catch my drift? I think old people should count themselves lucky that they're entitled to a discount when the majority of people who travel aren't

I know when I am old the only thing that will cross my mind is how greatful that I am to get a discount when others don't, rather than complain that the person travelling with me doesn't get a discount too.
