This is an excellent series, and the quality shows through, unlike series 2 which Gerry Anderson lost control of - which seemed a bit silly.

Gerry reportly said that series 2 of Space 1999 was one of the biggest disappointments of his career.

An excellent price.

I enjoyed it as a kid but now its totally stupid, the moon was knocked out of its orbit by a nuke explosion, ok .... but then it can suddenly travel faster than the speed of light, deaccelerate, visit planets, and then accelerate again and repeat the process. All because of a nuclear explosion ?

They could have just said some god like power was controling them like puppets and that would filled in any holes.

D.

Season 1 is the season to have, some of the best stories and the production values are higher.

I read a piece where Gerry Anderson said that he was asked to introduce more "monsters" in Season 2 to make it more appealing to an American audience.

Sadly the introduction of more "monsters" was at the expense of the storylines and values you allude to in your post. If you consider that the best Captain in Star Trek was British with the requisite acting skills, demeanour (even though he was supposed to be French) and intelligence then I think they should not have "dumbed down" Space 1999.

I believe Dr. Who is very popular "across the pond" for the reasons why the first season of Space 1999 was so much more superior than S2 (ie. storylines and acting). Maybe they should have stuck to the values of S1 and got a couple of more seasons out of Space 1999...
