Crazy prices for not a huge jump in performance by any means.

true but some people have quite a bit of money to burn, these are about 40% faster for encoding in x264, there are certain apps that are miles faster than penryn.

I wont be buying until 6gb 1600mhz ram is under £140, cpu's under £170 and boards under £130 but lots of people will be upgrading so i thought i'd make this thread.

Don't get me wrong, thanks for the good thread. Its just the value for money aspect that is cold here, you could buy 4GB of DDR2, a Q6600 and a decent motherboard for the price of a i7 motherboard alone.

well yes you could, obviously you would need a board too. the core i7 920 is very fast and overclocks to 3.9ghz so its very good, its just a shame the boards and ram are so expensive, cpu too. Hopefully in 3 months the prices will be alot lower.

Info about x58 boards and core i7 cpu's in those links. Basically x58 boards support triple channel memory and support the new core i7 cpu's. Core i7 cpu's have hyperthreading and onchip memory controller, giving 8 logical cores, only 4 real cores. They are substantially faster than the q9300/q9450 etc cpu's. The 920 (cheapest) overclocks to around 3.9ghz with good cooling. If you encode x264 or divx 6.8 you will see a massive speed increase, 40% ish with x264.

This is going to be more than what you bargained for but if you really want to know about i7 then it's a good start...

Voted cold I'm afraid.

Don't take this personally hajj_3 - top marks for a neat, detailed post with all the links, etc - but that's where it ends.

These have just come out & cost the earth - those are the biggest reasons not to buy just now. Because they're £5-10 cheaper than anywhere else, offer double the performance of previous gen & can overclock well, doesn't necessarily make them a good deal, or even a slightly good deal. Only the minority die-hard enthusiasts may think along those lines.

Post this in 3 months when prices may be lower - a lot lower, as we all hope. The more these do not sell over the next few months, the greater the chances that prices will fall sooner

It's about HOT deals and bargains which these are simply not.

There not the cheapest deals either even a quick google product search yeilds cheaper results:

Not a bad price - considering some of those google links soft purple are EDI people who dont actually have stock.

Voted hot - they're cheap for a new premium price product - but no doubt they'll become cheaper in the not-so-distant future :-)

softpurple, i nor probably anyone else has heard of dinopc.com lol. Scan/dabs/amazon/ebuyer/overclockers/microdirect/aria/play are the established computer retailers that people trust and actually have their own stock and dont use EDI.

These are a hot deal if you are wanting a core i7 system. Same with posting £1500 tv's, if you are after the tv posted then its a hot deal, if people say its only a bit better than a £900 tv it doesnt mean its a bad deal, means its a premium product which these components are.

For people with money to burn, go ahead and buy Core i7 for everyone else wait at least 12 weeks as the price is likely to drop drastically.
