ActiFry
This revolutionary new fryer by Tefal allows you to cook enough chips to feed a family of four with just one spoonful of oil and only 3% fat! This makes it much more economical to run, as well as safer and easier to clean. And not only can it cook chips, but also a whole range of other meals including stir-fried vegetables, meat, fish and even pudding

As featured on BBC Watchdog recently - thus a smoking hot deal, but not in the usual way.

I have one of these and they are great. A couple of weeks ago, my one went wrong and emittted black smoke. Tefal have picked it up and sent another one. We have no issue with it:

http://www.tefal.co.uk/actifry/default.htm
The Tefal Actifry is a very safe product that has undergone over 500 hours of safety tests and had to pass an independent laboratory test to gain the European Safety Standards certification.

Watchdog reported a few cases where customers saw smoke emit from their Actifry. In the rare occasion of a product failure this is perfectly normal and safe. Any appliance with a hot air heating system (i.e. convection oven, hairdryer) will produce smoke should the fan fail. This is because it causes the element to overheat and melt a small amount of surrounding plastics. However, The Actifry has been designed to "fail safe" as it will automatically shut power off immediately and is made from flame retardant plastics to ensure absolute fire safety.

Over 500,000 Actifry’s have been sold worldwide without a single report of personal injury and 99.6% of UK customers who have brought an Actifry have not reported any problems at all and continue to enjoy this revolutionary innovation. Tefal have also been in consultation with Trading Standards that looks after the interests of consumer safety.

Cold for me!

Could be worth as much as £50 if they didn't have a dangerous inherent fault.

I would steer clear as these are plummeting in price due to all the bad press lately.

These are very good. Very useful and easy to use, I would definately reccommend it.
Still too pricey for what it is though.I can't believe it costs that much to make.

I have had one for many months now, and it has been brilliant...my take on these things is that there is danger with chip pans, frying pans, grills, .....therefore you NEVER leave these things unattended, also partly the reason why the timer on this is a timer only I imagine. There is danger and risk with most things, we need to be responsible & my brother inl aw is a fire chief, so I hear a lot of things first hand, let.s not get onto plug in air fresheners!
It is a great kitchen 'gadget' - a phrase I hesitate to use as this gadget is one I use and use - this is less than the costco price, which is currently £99 plus VAT - great for cooking many more things than just chips too!

The alternative story
:
Product safety testing
Watchdog took a brand new Actifry to a product safety testing laboratory to find out what went wrong. With our new Actifry, the lab replicated six month's use, in just three days and everything seemed to work fine. However, when the scientists simulated a fan failure - which they say is one of the most common faults in products like this - the Actifry should have been able to cope just fine, but within seconds it was on fire.
TÜV Product Service compliance services manager Richard Poate, who tested the Actifry for Watchdog, said: "Anything that emits that degree of smoke and fire could have potential catastrophic effects. This is a fundamental design issue that should have been detected very, very easily. All the safety standards require you to simulate failures like motor failure, fan failure, and how this got past the safety testing is really quite beyond me. In my opinion, there should be a recall."
