I know thisforums is littered with the little netbooks but the whole point of the forum is to share the deal that people have found and someone that is in the market for there childs first laptop is not really going to go far wrong with this. Yeah you are not going to do anything too damanding with it but that is not the point of it, Like i have already said this machice is ideal for a childs first laptop or a business traveller or anyone that needs to browse the web or do a bit of word processing on the move.

One thing i dont get about the spec (and i have to say i know pretty much nothing about netbooks) is why can you not plug an external hard drive in it? is it a power issue or operating system issue becuase if it power than surely a self powered external hdd would be fine?

128mb RAM for heavens sake...
Might as well get a second hand eeepc for approx the same price even if it is for a child

Seriously, some things may be "cheap" but they are so flawed compared to the competition that buying them would be a completely false economy.

come on that not really true is it? i remember one of my first computer that came with 16mb ram and 2.1gb hard drive and that could easily browse the internet and do word processing and that is just what this machine is designed to do. you do not need masses amount of ram if you are doing simple tasks and an operating systems that does not eat it all up.

Back then a webpage rarely had animated gifs, let alone javascript, flash objects, alpha transparent PNGs, as well as fit in a 640x480 display.

These days, the most popular websites, lets say facebook, bbc, ebay etc either wont fit in anything less than 1024 pixels wide, or just look horrible. No kid is going to want to use this, it's woefully inadequate for any child, and any parent that buys this for their kid needs a slap on thewrist when the money could be spent on something more worth of a chunk of thier paypacket.

I dont mind the plethora of netbook deals, but this one really irritates me. The maplin netbook is a seriously low grade piece of cr*p from a generic chinese getup. Seriously - look for a good deal on something like the Acer or Asus netbooks and get something you'll be able to rely on - value for money, not just cheap!

This is not Intel compatible and you are really stuck with what you buy. From the website in response to whether you could install XP on it:

"The minibook comes with a version of Linux pre installed on a chip inside the minibook. It is not possible to remove, upgrade or re-install on this chip."
