Gateway Laptop AMD 1.8Ghz DVDRW 60Gb HDD - £196.11 (ML3108b) @ IJT Direct

£196.11

47°

FOUND BY: muddyfox470 1 year, 1 day ago

STARTS: 22/11/2008

I've used this company before and they have been great, very friendly CS and normally great prices. Just had this mailshot, and compared to all these net books this sounds like a great deal, for a fully fledged laptop with a GeForce 6100 Graphics card. For this money it would make a great workhorse/student laptop. Gateway make reliable and sturdy machines, backed by their 12 months warranty.

£196.11 includes postage etc. when you use the discount voucher EWT99 at checkout.

Comes with a full years warranty (Gateway factory Refurbished)

Quick Spec: [see post below for more details]
AMD Sempron 3400+
512Mb RAM (see post below)
60Gb PATA Harddrive
NVidia 6100 Graphics
14.1 inch Ultrabright Screen (1280*800)
Dual Layer DVDRW
Integrated Memory Card Reader
Vista Home Basic and Works 8.5

For the price considering the spec I think it is pretty good value, and in my opinion Semprons are pretty damn good processors, much better than their Intel opposition (Celeron). They have other laptops available as well.

This memory from play.com would be able to be used and make this into a pretty quick work/play/portable machine
http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/574860...y/Product.html for £15!!

Note the Go6100 is better than most onboard graphics cards however it will still struggle to play todays games.

I think their other offering is more interesting

17" T5300 Core 2 Duo 2GB for £300 but that is let down by the lack of any decent graphics processor (and is also refurbished).

Does 512MB memory actually meet Vista's minimum requirements? I suppose that shortcoming is relatively easy to overcome though. The Go 6100 appears equivalent to Intels GMA X3100 built in graphics.

As i posted spend £15 on the memory from play it will work and will make it an awesome laptop for the price. Anybody can upgrade the memory and it won't void your warranty.

http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/574860...y/Product.html

(normally all you have to do is remove two small screws from a door underneath the laptop, and slot in the memory - it can only go in one way so you can't get it wrong!)

You don't seem to find many branded laptops in as new condition (you might as well consider this new as it is stated as being in "absolutely perfect A1 condition") with 12 months warranty, DVDRW, separate graphics, Vista [altho i prefer XP], and integrated memory card reader (a god send with digital cameras etc).

For less than £200 delivered I think you will find it hard to beat for a fully fledged laptop [definitely upgrade with the 2gb memory though, making it £211 all in! ]

I have to say I think this will be a VERY slow laptop.

The AMD Sempron 3400 CPU first came out in 2005, making it VERY old in CPU terms (Sempron tend to be the low end budget CPUs anyway)

512Mb of memory (particularly if you are using part of it for the graphics) is not enough for Vista

The hard disk spin speed is listed as 4200 rpm. Full size hard disks normaly spin at 7200rpm, laptop hard disks normally spin at 5400 rpm, so a hard disk runing at 4200rpm is pretty slow.

So a slow CPU, coupled with only 512Mb of RAM, plus a slow hard disk, all points to a VERY slow laptop.

The screen is also only 14.1" which is pretty small.

I realise that a laptop for less than £200 is pretty good, but just be aware of what you are buying.

There is a discusion here about this laptop from August 2007 (may be slow to load but does eventually)

Most of the people say how awful it performs with Vista on it.

Extra memory only improves it marginally.

Many of the people removed Vista and reinstalled XP.
