LightScribe is an optical disc recording technology that utilizes specially coated recordable CD and DVD media to produce laser-etched labels with text or graphics, as opposed to stick-on labels and printable discs.

The LightScribe method uses the laser in a way similar to when plain data is written to the disc; a greyscale image of the label is etched onto the upper side of the disc. The required discs come in many colors: monotone (the original), red, green, blue, yellow, and orange backgrounds.

The purpose of LightScribe is to allow users to create direct-to-disc labels (as opposed to stick-on labels), using their optical disc writer. Special discs and a compatible disc writer are required. Before or after burning data to the read-side of the disc, the user simply turns the medium over and inserts it with the label side down. The drive's laser then etches into the label side in such a way that an image is produced.

Might be useful to somebody!

Good price
Good drive too, I bought one a few weeks ago and the speeds have impressed me, great for burning 360 game downloads, for erm ***ahem*** back up purposes.

Thanks to OP for reminding me as I need (well more of want) to order a second one.

The lightscribe just seems gimmicky to me though.

Lol, back up purposes!

The Lightscribe is good for me as a photographer when supplying people with discs, looks good too.

Couldn't even find one cheaper on Fleabay so this seemed good. Ordered today so will see what it's like when it arrives!

I have always used LG to replace any duff drives I've had over the years, none have failed yet

They also play just about anything too! I'm sure if I trimmed one of me old 45's it'd have a go at that as well

You won't be dissapointed

The problem with Lightscribe is the price of the media!

Decent price for me because it's a retail bundle so should come with software such as Nero, but doesn't specify?

I've been using LG drives for a while now mostly because I find (/found) DVD-RAM useful to have and they've been very reliable for me so far both in terms of drive reliability and rate of successful disc writes.

Almost all PCs take IDE drives (though SATA is slowly phasing it out) although you may not have any free connections for them (2 devices max per cable). I'd say the easiest way is just to take the side off the case and have a look! If you have SATA ports though, I'd recommend going for an SATA drive rather than sharing an IDE (PATA) BUS between devices, especially hard drives.

Here's a guide to installing an IDE optical drive. The biggest worry is probably in setting primary and slave via the cables and master and secondary via the jumpers. It's really not difficult though, don't let that put you off. And you can always post back here to ask for assitance should you have any problems when it arrives!

Looks like an excellent price for what is (in my experience) a superior quality of optical drive.
Can anybody here help with a question though - do these handle CDG (Karaoke) discs?
Heat added.
