Acer 6930G £649.99 @ Play.com - misadvertised

£649.99

FOUND BY: mr.velvet 11 months, 1 week ago

This was an amazing spec machine for the price. A similarly specced Dell XPS 1730 will set you back £1,173. However, it is being misdescribed on the site: it has a 1366x768 screen. It's not worth the money.

Key points:
2GHz Core 2 Duo (1066MHz bus means it's a 45nm chip)
Nvidia 9600M GS (lower clocked GT chip, can be overclocked)
16" screen - [1920x1080 resolution] 1366x768 resolution

Main spec:
Windows Vista® Home Premium
Intel® Core 2 Duo P7350 (2.0GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 3MB L2 Cache)
16" WXGA Acer CineBrite TFT LCD, 16:9 Aspect Ratio
1*2GB & 1*1GB RAM (3GB total)
250GB 5400rpm Hard Disk Drive
DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive
NVIDIA® GeForce® 9600M GS - 512MB VRAM
Intel® Wireless WiFi Link 5100/5300 (dual-band quad-mode 802.11a/b/g/Draft-N) Wi-Fi
6 cell Li-ion Battery
5-in-1 card reader (SD, MMC, MS, MS PRO, xD)
0.3 MP Crystal Eye Webcam
Acer Bio-Protection fingerprint solution

Which part of this is the amazing spec? Sure the graphics card is nice, but only 2Ghz, 3GB RAM, 250 hard drive... not exactly high spec. Not even a blu-ray drive.

I may be proven wrong but seems cold to me (sorry).

Yeah have to agree i got much better for my money, same processor, blu-ray, 17" screen, 4gb ram, 320gb HDD, 9600m GT graphics and it was hp rather than acer so much better. I paid £670 for that spec and it went as low as £630

Link?

Though I'm happy with my current Acer 5685WLMi, and I'm not sure an extra £50 is worth it for an extra gig of RAM, 120GB HDD. Blu-ray, perhaps. But again, why watch HD films on a laptop?

:
it went as low as £630
But is it that price /now/ ? If it is, then it's a better deal. If it was a special, then it's not as I cant buy it.

In your opinion. Many others would disagree.

phatdaveuk:
Sure the graphics card is nice,
It's about the best mid-range graphics you can get in a laptop. Anything else will set you back over £1000.
phatdaveuk:
but only 2Ghz,
Newest Core 2 Duo, 45nm means less heat and lower power drain, so longer battery life. It may not be as fast as a T9400 but it will last longer.
phatdaveuk:
3GB RAM,
As opposed to 4GB? £10?
phatdaveuk:
250 hard drive...
OK, not amazing, but fine for the price.
phatdaveuk:
not exactly high spec.
Screen, graphics. How much does a Dell cost with this screen res?
phatdaveuk:
Not even a blu-ray drive.
How long will your battery last watching a blu-ray disc? What benefit do you get watching HD on a laptop screen? What apart from HD movies comes on Blu-ray?

phatdaveuk:
I may be proven wrong but seems cold to me (sorry).
Fine.

It's listed as such. If it turns up and it's not, it's going back.

PCWorld have a 6930G for £587.21 which includes a Blu-ray drive but lower spec video card - link. I believe it has a full HD screen as when I was looking on the Acer site last week, they only appeared to offer 1920x1080 on this model. PCW list it as WXGAG8 but this isn't a screen standard I am aware of.

For this price you could get an Intel T8 or T9 which are 2Ghz upwards mostly 2.4 2.5, penryn type T7 series aren't as good as they're mostly cheap upgrades from the T5s. The screen resolution I agree is good but you do not compare it to Dell screens as they're better quality, I was watching a film on a friends acer today and the LITTLEST change in angle changed the black to pure grey. Your battery wouldn't last as long anyway if you're going to have it on full resolution it's going to give the graphics card some strain constantly, plus it's only a 6-cell.

And another thing, it's an Acer - I heard someone say you can't polish a turd. But so long as you're happy with it.

I agree it's £50 more, but I'm sure if you ask any computer expert the price upgrade is well worth it, as you're getting better processor, better quality, more ram, more HDD, blu-ray and IMO better looks. Sure the acer has better at some such as graphics card. But if you'd like me to look I'd help, I just found this one quickly. And I buy this over the acer any day.

Please do. I've been hanging on until I found one with a 9600M (I need a decent card). If it has a P8/9 then all the better, even if it's more. (Just noticed the T8/9 is last gen, 800MHz FSB, T8 has 3MB L2 cache, same as the P7350).

Not considered looking at the Dell outlet? You can get £1000+ XPSs for about £500 delivered.
e.g.
WXGA+ with LED screen,
512mb graphics cards,

Yeah, but the trouble with those is the XPS 1730s are all around £800 and the XPS1530s only have a maximum of a 8600M GT - the 9600 is considerably faster.

I nearly bought an XPS 1530 from there a couple of months ago (IIRC P8200, 4GB, WUXGA) but was put off by the 8600M. Though it was only £500. In hindsight, I probably should have got it though this was just after Nvidia had admitted there was a problem with some of their 8-series chips.

I'm sure there was a discount thing going on the Dell Outlet recently (but they upped thier prices) can't remember. Here there is contradictions, where if you have a fast processor but OK graphics will it be better than worse processor and better graphics? I'd prefer the first option as I doubt gaming will be 24/7. It's so frustrating putting hands on someone elses laptop and waiting for AGES for something to load, you think "they have to live with this waiting." Good luck anyway, but I'd keep an eye out on the outlet if I was you.
