ASDA DELIVERS HOLIDAY CHEER FOR CHRISTMAS TRAVELLERS
New prices of 85.9pp on petrol and 97.9ppl for diesel
ASDA has delivered an early Christmas present to Britain's motorists as they start to head off for the festive holidays - another cut in petrol prices.

Petrol will be down to 85.9p a litre and diesel 97.9ppl from tomorrow.

The move means a typical driver is now saving £17.60 each time they fill up - and with the AA predicting 11% of drivers will notch up more than 100 miles visiting family and friends this Christmas it will be a welcome saving.*

The new prices are the lowest they have been for almost two years and means drivers are ending 2008 with much more in their pockets following the summer's rocketing prices.

The move also flies in the face of predictions that petrol prices will start to rise again following Opec's decision to cut oil production yesterday.

ASDA trading director Darren Blackhurst said: "Despite the decision to slash supply, this has yet to have an effect on the market and means we are able to drop prices again.

"Our marketing-leading petrol prices are now at a 22-month low following 14 consecutive cuts. We are committed to delivering the best prices this Christmas and this will be a festive boost to cash-strapped customers."

Opec, which produces 40% of the world's oil, yesterday announced it would cut supplies in a bid to boost oil prices from about $40 a barrel to $75. The price per barrel had reached a high of $147 in July.

ASDA's new prices will be effective at all of its 173 forecourts from tomorrow morning (Friday, December 19).

Petrol was last at 85.9ppl in February 2007.

* Figure based on an average 55 litre tank and based on the reduction from a summer high of 117.9ppl for unleaded petrol versus tomorrow's 85.9ppl

Well done ASDA

Shame on OPEC for trying to force the price back up again, just what the world economy needs right now

price listed on the left hand side should be 86p if your rounding to the nearest whole number. hopefully the local tesco's will follow suit soon as they regularly do, asda and morrisons keep it up for setting the trend

Diesel fuelcard price is currently 82.9p (before VAT obviously) which takes it to 95.9p after VAT - they could still chop a bit off to help us motorists out, but 97.9p is pretty darn good really.

price of oil is at its lowest for about four and a half years so why is the fuel price on the forecourt only at a 22 month low? should be around 70-75p a litre of petrol imho

oh well they will bleed you dry for as long as they can and pass the savings on as slow as they can.

why diesel is more expensive than petrol in the UK? the rest of the world is usually diesel about 10p cheaper than petrol!!!! is it because the government knows we like diesel cars???!

The petrol price should have come right down in auguest!!!!.... not now!!!! i was in sydney this aug and as soon as the news said the barrel price had dropped the forecourt dropped 30-40cents (20p) the next day!!! why cant ripp-off briton do the same?!?!
