Humax are by far the best PRV's, have had a single tuner version for years with no problems. Just lucky to pick up yesterday the older but better 9200 from the PC world sale for £85

no glitches except excessively loud fan noise. Cured by installing the latest software update.

note that the 9200 is a four year old model whereas the 9150 was first produced in Jul 08.

You were lucky! It's a far better machine than the new models, which receive enormous numbers of complaints about the fan noise. I know there's a firmware update, but my guess is that all that will do by slowing the fan down is cause overheating problems. Looks like a badly designed product, which is a shame because the old ones were excellent.

Except that slowing the fan down is likely to cause overheating problems. It was designed for a certain level of cooling, and it won't get that with a slower fan speed.

Nope, we have the older 9200 which has the same firmware and it is, on the whole, excellent. There are a few niggles but none are too major. The main gripe is the time it takes for the epg to load.

I bought my parents a 9150 as a christmas present and it seems fine except, unlike the 9200, the fan is a bit noisy. This isn't an issue for my parents as my dad needs the telly up quite loud, though if you tend to listen with the volume down low then imho it would be a problem. I think maybe that there is a firmware due to be released which will address the noisy fan.

not true at all. The new smart fan control operates only when required rather than being permanently on.

Do you really think they'd put an update out that could potentially damage their own units or cause a fire?

Check the hummy forums and nobody has reported overheating problems anywhere.

9200s often came with VERY noisy fans indeed - mine went straight back to John Lewis who said the din was "normal" so I got my money back. At least with the poorly designed 9150/9300 they later worked out a software fix for their incompetence = MAJOR progress but still totally astonishing to me that they keep getting it SO wrong.

Allegedly 9150s dated Oct 08 come with the improved firmware already installed, otherwise you either need to wait for a software update over the airwaves or download it from Humax's site to your PC and RS232 serial cable it to the box (now THATs old technology lol).

I take your point, but I'm not in any way suggesting that the overheating will cause a fire. I am suggesting, though, that the unit was designed with a certain level of cooling, and that reducing that level of cooling will lead to problems. Not now, obviously, but over a period of time.

The reason nobody has (yet) reported any overheating problems is that they won't yet have shown up. These things rarely do show up for quite a while. As for Humax being concerned about damaged units, I think their concerns will run out at about the same time the warranty runs out.

The design life of these machines will have been calculated on the original cooling capability. Anything less than that is a compromise which is likely to cause problems over time.
