Excellent - a whole brand new thread. Thanks Suze
Almanac!! Do you get a whole lot of choices for each day?
A very happy New Year to you and all and hoping for an excellent 2009. You can tell us what your Christmas tree wishes were in a year's time!!
I am feeling fine - in contrast to yesterday. We had the six of us here and a quiet celebration.

:
In giving freedom to the slave, we assure freedom to the free - Abraham Lincoln
It would have been a lot more effective if everyone - women, non-landed, blacks had all been given the vote. Power elites. Don't get me started.

:
100 - number of light bulbs on the first Times Square New Year's Eve ball, dropped to ring in 1907.
Elder son and G/F were till up to watch this year's Times Square. It seems it's the equivalent of Big Ben for all of N America.

I think this post has boosted your awesomeness by one!!

Happy New Year!
talk about indulgences ... we were spoilt rotten, everyone brought champs – we had the Bollys, Cliquets, Moets, Doms etc ... i drank more than my fill as we had a lot of food throughout [5 types of starters including some smoked salmon, salmon sashimi, our sushi, crudités w melted camembert (i prefer camembert with cranberry though)] followed by a 'steamboat' main course (someone joked you had to take off your clothes for the 'steam bath' which of course got us a little worried lol) it looked like a very healthy dish, done in reverse order to the usual ... veges thrown into the pot (which is on a hot plate that you can also fry up/bbq if you wish) first then small pieces of meat then it soon boils down to soup stock as you put in several layers/cycles, then you add in the noodles at the end and finish it all off. nothing wasted really. then off to desert – savoury biscuits with different types of cheeses, out came the Sauterney (desert wine, grand cru). yummy truffles, which were surprisingly from Costco! new tip, the truffles went very well with the Tallisker reserve ...

then a mad rush for texting and calling loved ones leaving messages to say Happy New Year when we realised it was a quarter to midnight! all adjourned into the living room and Hootenany was counting down, the champs was ready and all cheered to the London fireworks ... that was pretty elaborate and at one point it looked OTT with the sky going totally white like a mushroom cloud lol! (although on the morning news, it looked like Edinburgh's fireworks display was more spectacular!)

we stayed over, i plopped into bed about 15 mins before the party ended – was about 3am at that stage! woke up about 10am talking with the OH in bed, until our hostess had gotten up then we had a chat as

our hostess was so organised they had (manually) cleared the table and washed the dishes sometime between cheering and going to bed. all that was left to do was morning coffee and lunch with the leftovers, and of course chatting about things. oh and bringing all the bottles out for recycling!

all in all seems a pretty chilled out party. there were 7-8 people which was a nice group.

we're now waiting for the Oz friends to pop by after their shopping in Bluewater. Although we suspect they're probably too pooped to come by, maybe later ... the OH has to go to work tomorrow, i will be doing more accounts tying up loose ends and clearing up. saturday we'd planned to meet a couple friends for lunch at the Elk (havent seen them a little less than a year!) and maybe two more people individually. or maybe one on Sunday we'll see try do all in one day giving Sunday a day of proper rest before the 1st day of work *bleah wish there was maybe another few days more .... hehe.
------------
saw Times Square celeb with Clinton dancing with Hillary, nice to see them enjoying it.

100 lightbulbs dropped from on high and crashing to give that 'ring'? hmm

listened to this with Mairi Campbell earlier (a day later but poignant anyway)

Just back in the door. Our friends came by after shopping and we offered some Cava. then we decided to book a dinner table at the Thai. Surprisingly something is open for the hungry folk. But before that, we went to the Marshes to light up three lanterns. First timers so I ensured we had three working lighters then walked to the middle of the field away from traffic. There was no wind so we each (the OH and I shared one, the two friends are single, lit our lanterns or rather, helped each other LOL) thought of a wish and then let them go one by one. Off they floated away to the cloudy grey skies carrying our wishes. Think everyone was quite taken by how romantic it looked and we kissed each other and held hands in friendship, we used to spend New Years together all 4 of us before one of them travelled to Oz. Then we went to dinner was stuffed even though we shared starters. Laughed about the good ole times. After dinner we headed to theirs having more Moet, ice cream, chocs (mine had a gold flake in it!) and took silly photos of each other. We walked home (only about 15-20 mins away) feeling generally quite pleased the first day of 2009 has gone quite well.

Thought of you all here and hope everyone is enjoying their days too in good company of loved ones. Time for bed methinks. Night night sweet dreams

Ahem !! So nobody thought of sending me the link ?? I shall have to dust down the naughty bench !!

Anyway you don't get rid of me that easy, I found it !!
New Almanac looks like being a winner then Suze ??

In giving freedom to the slave, we assure feedom to the free - Abraham Lincoln
Load of tosh Mr Lincoln, absolute load of piffle.

Never let your sense of morals prevent you from doing what's right
But just what IS right ? I've always struggled with that question.

466 - number of books written by Isaac Asimov, according to his memoir.
I've read a lot of S/F but mostly as a teenager. Most of the technology comes to fruition just not the Aliens, or are they out there already ?? I loved MIB 1&2 and probably my all time favourite S/F film is "The Man Who Fell To Earth" a film from 1978 (?) with David Bowie that predicted the explosion in digital photography.

I should find a suitable tune or two to celebrate the new thread and new year.

I'm stupid , I missed the link , d'oh.

Aha I realise why now, chesso added in the link with an edit of a post way after I read it and it hasn't shown on my subscriptions. I plead Not Guilty.

2009, tunnel, light at the end. Let's hope so eh

Hello everyone. It's bright and cold here. I am on the point of resolving to pull myself together and get slimmer and fitter - it's so difficult when it's cold though.
Hottoshop - I'm trying not to let the post count rise quite so rapidly Sorry though, I might have thought a bit more clearly.
Kippy - serious food and drink expenses there - hope it was all good and tasty!! It certainly sounds like an excellent New Year's Eve.Let's hope it heralds a super 2009.
Suze - work again. Did you choose Wed and Fri or were they 'given' to you? I was thinking that perhaps two days together might be better ( mentally!!). Fish supper planned I hope.
Light at the end of the tunnel hottoshop - a good thought. Things brighten up literally from now.
Space Oddessy is good. Very Apollo as well Very good music choices

Yes, what is right and ..
what sort of morality would you have if your morals were wrong and ..
how would you know??
:
466 - number of books written by Isaac Asimov, according to his memoir.
Gosh that's a lot!! Hubby is a big SF/Fantasy reader and I've read a few - I never have been a big reader. Was it Asimov who first wrote about robots? I guess he must have written about just about everything in that many books.

lol re: expenses ... that's the good thing about being older and not a student anymore ... have to up the game to keep up with your peers/older ones.

unfortunately those 'hospitality' expenses i will not be able to 'claim for under Self Assessment tax returns - bleah, makes the self-employed really feel like stingy creeps lol.

taking a break here from the accounts. next to do: have to cross check my entries from receipts, against my credit card statements for transactions i might have missed out. oh shoot, need to book table for lunch tomorrow!
