You may still be able to raise an in-warranty repair request online. When ours failed after 12 months MS still repaired it completely free of charge (they even collected it). Certainly worth a try.

MS have an extended warranty for the RRoD problem for 3 years after purchase. They will only honour it to the original purchaser.

Managed to fix mine myself just the other day, its quite easy if you know what your doing. :D

Managed to fix mine myself just the other day, its quite easy if you know what your doing. :D
Of course it's easy to fix if you have a hot air rework station and the patience to reball the CPU, GPU and RAM, as this is the only way to fix the problem permanently.

Since MS cover this with a three year warranty there's no point.

It only happened after I put in the new Tomb Raider game (Purchased via hotukdeals - ta)
It said an update was required and then it crashed. I would say I have only ever played my elite for 20 hours in the year I have owned it. Dreadful piece of software when this can happen so easily. MS are sending me the documents to send it away. Estimated at 4-6 weeks.

If they're emailing you the UPS labels etc (which they should be), you'll get it back in less than two weeks. That's the current turnaround.
