STARTS: 12/02/2009

I bought these earlier in the Cardiff Bay Asda Store - so hopefully available in other stores too (not online). Asda's Extra Special Outdoor Bred, British Pork Sausages are usually £2.28 a pack or any 3 packs for £6, but noticed that they are on rollback to only £1!

Just having a guess, but the meat content should be over 90%.
Would never have bought these for £2.28 for only 6 sausages!
Well there you go 80% pig.

Why should it be over 90%?
You are going to be sorely disappointed expecting sausages with that meat content!

I regularly pay over £2.28 for six sausages! Tht's 400g it is almost a Pound, the number isn't the issue, it is the WEIGHT! They aren't Walls or Richmond, that's what decent sausages cost!

Nothing wrong with Pork sausages as low as 65% if well made - OK 80 to 85 is probably a good proportion for a decent premium sausage (70 to 95% would be rightly be called a premium sausage) - it is a British sausage, not a salami!

The Telegraph's intro to sausages in this article is generally quite interesting and I would generally agree with it:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddr...-sausages.html
the legal standards are condensed into this article here:
http://www.tameside.gov.uk/tradingst.../factsheets/06

I haven't had Asda sausages, but certainly for 80% meat sausages, £1 a pack is cheap, and certaily cheaper than the similar ranges in the mainstream supermarkets :-)

Had these for my dinner last night - yummy. Texture and taste took me back a few decades when sausages were real sausages - I always try one pack in case they are not all that but in this case my wife is going down to get some more Mmmmm

I prefer Salami :-). Lidl has a nice premium salami, 130g meat per 100g of salami, but the price (3 something) probably makes it off topic here.

Outdoor bred. I thought all pigs lived (mostly) outdoors? Does it mean that have been well looked after and not overfed with high protein foods to bulk them out?

Outdoor bred is not organic!

No but oputdoor bred is as it should be, free to roam, not barned animals which means better meat & happier pigs with better developed tissue.

Who mentioned organic.
I am not Organic, and wouldn't wan't to be!

Most pigs are kept indoors.

As for bulking them out, I would love to stuff my face all day everyday, unfortunately it's not the way to reach a ripe old age so if I want to, I can't - but as they will be dead at 6-9 months, that won't happen anyway, so it's not exactly being cruel

Outdoor bred, unfortunately, doesn't mean what it seems to. A pig live the second half of its life in a failrly cramped barn and still be classigied as outdoor-bred. Free range is better, generally.

Oops - still a hot deal though!
