No but you would have had to have entered your credit card details and you wouldn't have been able to open a US account which can be useful as they have different apps on their App Store or freebies to the UK store.

I have just opened a UK iTunes account without credit card details - just used a £15 gift card...

Browser shouldn't have any effect, just open itunes, log out your account, go to store, at the bottom is a drop down list that lets you select the country. Then follow the instructions.

I'm just not getting this at all.

After a long time, I have now managed to do this.
I was advised by iTunes recently to load the latest version.
I did this and then thought I would try to get the US account again and this time I sailed through it.
Great stuff.
