Need a speaker dock? If youre an iPod owner, theres no shortage of choice. Just drawing up a shortlist could take half a day and thats if you ignore the brands youve never heard of. Its a different story if you fancy a speaker dock for your Sony PSP.

Though its been around long enough to have been treated to liposuction and a crash diet, the PSP has never inspired the aftermarket peripherals like the iPod. So a dedicated speaker system is a puzzling move why now? And Tannoy being such a cheerfully old-school company makes it all the more intriguing.

Music rocks, politely
The SPC9200 is a smooth and understated design, and comes with a little remote. The PSP fits securely into the drop-down dock, and charges once its on there. There are two 7.5cm speaker drivers arranged behind the acoustic cloth and a 3.5mm input for use with other portables.

Any music youve got stored on your PSP sounds alive and well. Theyre only small drivers, and its only a little unit, but the SPC9200 musters some scale and separation. Plenty of iPod docks generate more meaningful bass than the Tannoy, but whats there is as punchy as Amir Khan.

Singers get a surprising amount of room to breathe, and the Tannoy focuses sounds well too. Only the treble really suffers from tight-fisted compression ratios, getting hard and splashy pretty easily
