Why has this been expired??

This deal is still available and it's the first I've seen under 6p/GB.
(EDIT: Since the OP updated the new prices that went up at lunch time today it's no longer quite the deal it was and no longer under 6p/GB for the 750GB 7K1000.B)

bought the 320gb version a couple of years ago and its just about full, never had any problems very fast drive. Ordered the 500gb for extra storage cheers.

Would the 750gb one be ok to stick in a Sky HD box ??

Check around on the internet - unless they've changed (which they could have) it was PATA hard disks that went into Sky boxes.

Just a little heads up, they are nicked named the deathstars because of the failure rate, I have two of them and they haven't died yet. Granted I don't use them much (external usb drives) but I am aware of the failure rate.

Just a note, even though the 7k1000.b only has 8mb cache, it really makes no difference to overall performance, compared to my other drives (samsung HD501/3) it is much quicker, sustaining higher transfer rates with less dramatic drop-offs

The cache it seems doesn't affect the drives too much

People have long memories when it comes to HD's failing. I had a new 500gb Samsung go click, click, click on me 12 months back; therefore ALL Samsung drives are rubbish IMO*.


*(I have two or three other perfectly functioning Samsung disks in the house)

Hitachi bought IBM's substandard hard drive division and have added to that substandard customer service to make one of the worst drive manufacturers on the planet.

I had a Hitachi drive that came in my laptop, the company that supplied the laptop was no longer in business when it failed. Despite the drive clearly displaying a build date of 4 months before failure hitachi would not repair or replace it. A dumb company that thinks it can ignore its responsibilities for their products reliability. Lets face it if they were concerned about reputation they wouldn't still use the DeskStar name that has and always will be associated with cheap rubbish.

Hitachi are not innovators in drive technology, they just build cheap and nasty drives that tend to go in low end PC's where price is more important than quality.

The real innovators in HardDrive technology are Western Digital and Seagate, admittedly seagate have had a few problem lately but at least their problems are because they are pushing the boundaries. Hitachi on the other hand just looks for ho to build the cheapest drive possible. It used to be that Drives came with lifetime or 5 year warranties, but companies like Hitachi killed that model by offering cheap rubbish with 1 year warranties knowing full well that many are likely to fail after the warranty period. These cheap drives make the better ones from the likes of Western Digital look expensive so they to have reduced their warranty to a year.

If you want a decent drive that is going to last the duration the best option at the moment is Western Digital.
