A middle-school science teacher and a hot sauce mogul vie for the Guinness World Record on the arcade classic, Donkey Kong in The King Of Kong.

In 1982, Life Magazine assembled the worlds greatest gamers for a photo shoot that would become the center spread of their 1982 Year-In-Photos edition. Billy Mitchell, who would later be named the Gamer of the Century, was one of the invitees.

Mitchell, the World Record holder on Centipede, had been tracking the score on Donkey Kong, and knew he could take that title as well. In front of the 20 best gamers in the world, Billy scored 874,300 points, a record many thought would never be broken.

In 2003, 35 year old family man Steve Wiebe, after losing his job at Boeing, found solace in Donkey Kong. Steve stumbled upon Billy Mitchells record online, and set out to break it. He began perfecting his game every night after his wife and kids went to bed, and not only surpassed Billys record, but ended up with a thought-to-be-impossible 1,000,000 points.

A tidal wave of media coverage followed, and Steve Wiebe quickly became a celebrity in his hometown of Seattle, WA. He also rediscovered his love for teaching, and regained the respect of all who once doubted him. Meanwhile, back in Hollywood, FL, Billy Mitchell hatched a plan to reclaim his fallen Donkey Kong record...

Great film

If you enjoy this, you might want to watch Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade. It is less 'exciting' than King of Kong, but gives a lot of interesting background stories on the key players from the early Arcade scene (the same faces from King of Kong). It is not available on DVD yet, but has been on cable TV in the US - there is a good torrent available, if that is your thing...............

This is a truly brilliant documentary. More about Good vs Evil than Donkey Kong. Epic.

It's already been said, but this is a brilliant movie. If you're looking for similar documentaries then I recommend Spellbound, Jesus Camp and American Movie. The latter being among my top favourites.

Excellent film. Anyone else think Brian Kuh is a bit creepy? The word snivelling also springs to mind.

This is worth watching just to see Billy, officially the biggest loser in the history of mankind. He truly believes that the 80's Kenny Rogers look is cool. Trust me Billy, there is not a cool atom in your body.

Add to that the fact that he's a complete tw*t (this is not a spoiler as he is a tw*t from the very start)

A very interesting film especially if you frequented arcades in the 80s and played the likes of Donkey Kong, Joust, Tron, Defender etc.

Great film, don't be put off if you are not into early arcade games, this is more about human psyche than computer games.
