Might be worth noting the following in the T & C's:

6. Only one Voucher per person and per transaction.
7. Adult is 12 & over at the Alton Towers Resort, 15 & over at
SEA LIFE Centres/Sanctuaries, 16 & over at Madame Tussauds, LEGOLAND Windsor and the
Dungeons, and 17 & over at Warwick Castle.

So, if Alton Towers are being picky, they could insist that your 12 year old pays for his own ticket.
