One of the few 2.1 systems to conveniently put the bass control on the remote.

I have these, I purchased them after a fairly exhaustive sound test of various 2.0 and 2.1 Sony, Altec Lansing, Logitech and Creative speakers in PC world. For the price (I paid £50) these were by far and away the best (my wife agreed).

I have a £800 surround sound setup with an Onkyo amp and Canton speakers, in a small room these sound almost as good!

Have these - awesome sound for the price.

And you can change the satellites as long as you put a phono plug on the speaker cable.

these are fantastic for the price. I paid around £45 from amazon at christmas, they are really well build, the speakers are metal, solid and heavy. The volume adjuster dial has a really smooth quality feel to it.

I was going to get the Creative GigaWorks T40 Series II Speakers but the build quality is appalling and wasn't impressed with the sound. I think you do really need a seperate sub for decent bass

I was going to go for them too, but I was initially put off by the size of the subwoofer which won't fit under my desk.
Then I decided that I would be better off with 2.0 speakers (was think of going for the Logitech X-140). I'll only be using them to listen to rock/indie and for gaming (race sims). I'm sure these would be great for drum and bass etc, but not sure about rock/indie - any thoughts?

But now these replies have got me tempted again....I've read lots of good reviews about the sound quality and I really like the look of them too.

I found all the 2.0 system's including the Creative Gigaworks units lacked any bass at all, they sounded miles apart from these.

Thanks kamran. You swung it for me.

I reserved a set and went off to Comet to collect but when I got ther I found they had th x-230s for £25 too. After a lot of indecision I tried them both out and have to say the 230s sounded better balanced. There seemed to be more of a gap between the low and high frequencies with the Z4 but I'm no hifi expert. However, the minimum bass level on the 230s was still too loud (I want to at least be able to be sociable when I choose to!) whereas the Z4s bass could be turned right down to zero. Plus the remote on the Z4s is really nice and has bass control on it so I went for the Z4s...only to find they had no stock! Decided to pay for them anyway at this price and will pick up when they next come in.

So it was a bit backward but I went for my own deal in the end!

Edit: Posted the X-230s as a deal too as it's much cheaper than even the best internet price, and they're supposed to be very good speakers too (http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/37081...-2-1-pc-speak/)

Would it be better to have these on a desktop and the subwoofer under the desk, or have a 5.1 system like the Logitech X 540 and have them all on the desktop, excluding one speaker and the subwoofer which would be under the desk?

do you think they are better? Also can anyone give advice on whether it's better to have 5.1 speakers on a desktop all on the same little desk (expect one subwoofer and speaker which would be under the desk), or to have 2.1 system like this?

Personally I slightly preferred the soound of the X230, but both were very good. I think the Z4s are generally regarded to be better though.

As for the 2.1/ 5.1 I'm afraid I haven't tried a 5.1 all on one desk, but I would think the wouldn't be much benefit from 5.1s as you'd have to have the "rear" speakers infront of you anyway. Plus there is all the clutter on the desk. So personally I'd go for a 2.1 but I can't say for sure what a 5,1 would sound like in that config, except that it's not what it's designed for of coarse which may mean the 2.1 might be better.

is it worth paying the extra for these instead of the x230s?
