EXPIRED - Upgrading your Dell to Vista

362°

FOUND BY: MikeT 3 years, 1 month ago

If you are buying a Dell in the next few weeks I would recommend that if available as an option you make sure to choose the MCE operating system as Dell have seen fit to charge an extra £25 to upgrade to Vista basic from XP home, where the upgrade from MCE to Vista Premium is Free.
You may find that when selecting your OS for your new Dell that (if available) selecting MCE is either a free upgrade or is charged at £23. This is still worth it as it will enable you to get the Vista Premium upgrade for free plus £11 postage instead of paying £25 plus £11 postage and only getting Vista basic.

Vista upgrades:

XP Home to Vista Basic Upgrade on: www.dellvistaupgrade.productorder.com before 03/31/07
£25 plus shipping & handling costs £11 payable at time of redemption Discount Details

MCE to Vista Premium Upgrade on: www.dellvistaupgrade.productorder.com before 03/31/07
FREE Upgrade+shipping&handling costs£11 payable at time of redemption Discount Details

XP Pro to Vista Business Upgrade on: www.dellvistaupgrade.productorder.com before 03/31/07
FREE Upgrade+shipping&handling costs£11 payable at time of redemption Discount Details

You may also find that any Dell you have bought after Oct 26th is eligible for the upgrade too, use the link below to enter your tag to find out.

Vista Upgrade

In order to be eligible for this program, you must have ordered an eligible Windows Vista Capable computer from Dell between October 26th, 2006 and March 15, 2007 with Genuine Windows® XP Home Edition, Genuine Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 or Genuine Windows XP Professional pre-installed. See list of eligible systems. This redemption must be completed by no later than March 31, 2007 in order to take advantage of the promotional upgrade offer.

Just did mine (MCE to Vista Premium £11) - says wont ship till February. Is odd that they want to charge Home users £25 extra, i thought it was free - especially as they only get the basic version!

No crystal ball here Ant so I cant tell what the new year will bring, but Vista will boost Dells sales no doubt and all other manufacturers will be also playing catch up with lots of potential customers having waited for Vista before buying so prices should be keen though the extra ram needed to run Vista smoothly may deplete some of the discounting.
As to Dells aftercare, I've not really had much of a problem with them, the Indian call center can sometimes be a pain but you can get round that if need be. They are normally happy to ship out some parts for customers to fit if there are problems with a C&R warranty item. Things in Dells dont seem to break very often for me, quite sturdily built I would say.

This of course may change to free if Dell get enough stick over it, but I thought it best to make buyers aware now in case it doesnt.

Prices may rise if memory chip prices become unstable...as there will be more demand for higher spec chips then the market may become unstable...but with Core 2 prices now falling below £100 and high spec 7000 series Gforce cards on the fall I would expect Dell prices will remain stable when Vista is launched.

I'm with Mike ..Dell have excellent build quality and are built to last.

Any chance of getting the Vista upgrade at a 'reduced price' if you purchased a Dell 2 months before the qualifying date of the 26th October 2006?

Does anyone know a way round?

I have signed up for this, but my card has changed. I called dell and they said from the 21st there will be a subpage and the website to change any details. Thought I would post this as it may help others in the same situation.
