I rarely have little rants on here, but I've decided that it's time for one.
I just headed over to the Sky News website. The five stories on their homepage are all labelled "BREAKING NEWS". Surely, if an internet news site is doing its job properly, then most of their recent stories should be "breaking news". So the phrase is, in essence, a little bit redundant (and sensationalist).
The term "BREAKING NEWS" isn't even being used properly. Their first "BREAKING NEWS" item is about three new cases of Swine Flu, which I read on the BBC News website over two hours ago... and even they weren't calling it breaking news...
In fact, I'd already read two of the other four stories over at BBC News a long while ago. They're hardly "breaking".
Discuss.
