Sapphire ATI Radeon HD4850 **1GB** Graphics Card £91.99 Delivered at Novatech

£91.99

474°

FOUND BY: nick_sub 6 months, 1 week ago

This looks like an amazing price for a 1GB 4850. However, I read that 1GB doesn't make much if any difference to performance (even at high resolutions). Would be grateful for any thoughts on that.

Not in stock at the moment, but 25 are due imminently.

Don't forget...3% quidco :)

any better than this: http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s...e.html?NOV-250

I just ordered the 250 as Nvidia are usually superior, then this pops up. Need to see some benchmarks etc now

edit: the ATI has more stream processors... will get some bechmarks now

Hi nick_sub, cheers for the post

Might be a good idea to correct the spelling in the thread title as someone researching "Sapphire Radeon" cards wouldn't hit your post

That was true in the past but recently ATI have been ahead of NVIDIA.

Have a look at this table:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...tx,2270-6.html

Looks like the 4850 just pips it.

its a decent card, not as good as 4870 but of course you'd pay more for that.

The thing to know with graphics cards is, get the best you can afford in your budget.

If you have £50 to spend, don't be looking at the latest and greatest. People move on quickly, so for example, i have a 7600gt and at the time, it was amazing, people now would say it is rubbish, but at the time it played most games on the market...

Don't listen to people who 'hate' on graphics cards, just get the best you can for your budget.

There's a review here (although it's about a year old)

It is a good card but £160 is no where near what it's worth.

It's not worth going for extra memory on lower end cards since they become obsolete so quickly, but on a card like this it's worth paying an extra tenner for - it may not be useful now but the card will still be working in two or three years and it could well be useful then.

(I own a 1GB 4850 myself)

One warning though, once you've gone high-end, it's a big stick to swallow to go back down to middle-end or budget...
I went from a HD2600XT 256MB - (overheated and RMAed)
HD2600XT 512MB -
8800GT 512MB -
HD3870 512MB - (Fan bug RMAed)
HD4870 512MB

I don't think I can go back to *middle-tier* anymore... Like a psychological thing right? I don't even PC game that much at all (Street Fighter IV is so good right now)

Whereas 5 or 6 years ago any card with 256MB or Radeon would've impressed me and my friends (oh how little we knew).

If I never bought a HD4870, a 1GB HD4850 would've been pretty cool especially at this price. Just be careful peeps, it's a spiral

EDIT: Oh but two of these in crossfire are apparently excellent for performance, so that's something to consider! Especially considering the cost of two HD4870's

Last edited by tubby20076 : 18-05-2009 at 22:51. Reason: EDIT: Crossfire

The current gen of cards are dropping in price so fast that you can't help but wonder whether the trade have seen the specs of the next gen of cards, or that their release is going to be sooner than expected, and are having to seriously discount the older cards to get them shifted quickly.

I know you can always say that about graphics cards, but I can't see them going up in price again before the new cards come out so there probably isn't a need to jump at one now as you think it is a bargain because this seems to be becoming the new price range for these cards

Yeah, you don't realise how horrible 30fps is until you play the same game at 60fps.

Great deal if you own an X38/x48/x58 motherboard to crossfire, as when crossfired, RAM isn't added up, so 2 4850 512MBs would only bring 512MB of RAM to the table, so this card will give not only the speed benefits of crossfiring, but a decent amount of RAM too, outperforming a 1GB 4870.

A good price for a decent card. I've got a HD4850 toxic and it blitzes COD5...all settings maxed still get 70fps plus.

Heat from me, this is a great deal.
