Prescription glasses for £8.50 inc delivery, anti-scratch/glare and UV @ SelectSpecs

Prescription glasses for £8.50 inc delivery, anti-scratch/glare and UV

What's the deal

Specialist online glasses retailer SelectSpecs is offering prescription lenses and frames for £5-8 plus £3.50 delivery. You get the frames AND lenses, plus more importantly anti-scratch, glare & UV protection.

While it's possible to get glasses online elsewhere for around a tenner, the extra lense protection would cost around £30. All these together would normally cost around £40 or even more from a high st retailer.

Which can you get?

There are eight different styles of £5 frames, plus two semi-rimless styles for £8 to choose from. Currently there are around 10,000 pairs available on first come first serve basis, though the offer might be extended.

The offer applies to single vision glasses with the following prescription ranges:

* Sphere (SPH) powers +6.00 to -6.00
* Cylindrical (CYL) powers +2.00 to -2.00

You can only get two pairs per order but if you did need more, you can order again. SelectSpecs says it'll deliver glasses within 10 days.

Getting your prescription to send to it

By law, opticians are obliged to provide you with a prescription. Once you have had a thorough eye test they must give you a copy of your prescription without requiring you to make a purchase.

Until 26 May Tesco is offering a free eye test (usually £10) plus 100 Clubcard points. For full info read the Forum Thread: Free Eye Test

When you order you'll need details to hand of your sphere, pupillary distance, cylinder and axis. More details in the Cheap Glasses article.

Why's it doing this?

It says it wants to do this to give something back to customer but more likely is it knows this is a great way to get publicity and let people know about its site.

Not strong enough for me - maybe I could just buy two pairs and stack them up.

Good price for UK based supplier. Think I'll stick with Zenni Optical though.

My personal view is that you have to be aware of the pitfalls when buying from one of these companies that deliver from abroad. Think about the difficulties in delivery in the first place, not to mention the customer services availability and logistics/time/money spent returning them.

I have bought glasses three times now from British online retailers and can not fault the products/service/delivery. But remember - these are bespoke items you are ordering, made to your specification - so delivery may vary at times imo.

I've bought twice now from abroad, without any problem. At at £35 for two pairs delivered (thats good ones, with full coating, not this shoddy discount stuff), I don't really care about the pitfalls, its worth it for the price! I have to say the quality is far above the discount British stuff though, so I view the risk as actually less.

If you want extra thin lenses, e.g. 1.67, www.goggles4u.co.uk is still cheaper. They charge just £26 for that upgrade (£54.95 at SelectSpecs)

I've used SelectSpecs and found them great. The low prices are amazing and the glasses I got were excellent quality. It took about 10 days for the specs to arrive. For 20 quid, I got glasses that would have cost over £150 in Specsavers. Thin lenses and all the trimming/coatings are included.

The best things is that you don't need to deal with a Specsavers manager that is keen to sell you overpriced fake designer glasses (their own brand), and then get rid of you as quick as possible.

The best way to annoy a Specsavers employee is to ask for your PD. Mine went ballistic! I asked very politely too. Once you do this, they know they are not going to get any business from you and they can turn nasty. It's the only piece of info. that they are not obliged to give you and they like to keep it VERY secret.
