EXPIRED - FS: 'The Douro Sovereign Set' - very rare, very collectable, no.295 of 500

POSTED BY: Scribbles 5 months, 4 weeks ago

This Royal Mint certified set of two rare sovereigns, plucked from the wreckage of the RMS Douro, is an extremely collectable piece of history and would take an integral place in any collection. Please guys, no silly comments quoting the current price of scrap gold or the fact that a sov is only worth £100. This is a two coin set of rare sovs, the set itself being one of only 500 produced. More pics can be made available on request.
The sovereigns are both catagorized as VERY FINE, and considering they have been sitting on the sea bed for 100 years that is as good as it gets. One is an 1863 shieldback, die no.5 below, and the other is an 1871 'long tail' george & dragon.
I am looking for £795, delivered by Royal Mail next day special delivery. Look upon this as an asset that will definately increase in value, like money in the bank. They are part of a private collection.

Price adjusted to £660 delivered
- Scribbles

£645 to sell, otherwise they expire
- Scribbles

£370 to clear. This offer will expire 9pm Sunday 6 Sept. This is an absolute gimme and lower than you will find anywhere.
- Scribbles

Asking Price: 370.00

Shipping/Payment Instructions: Free Royal Mail special delivery inc in the price, pics to follow. Any questions, please ask. BACS Bank Transfer is the only payment method I will accept for these.

Excuse my ignorance if I'm wrong here, but is this not the same item for £695?

The coins were part of a treasure trove rescued off of a sunken Royal Mail steamer from 1882. They were, I assume, bought and used for presentation sets and suchlike due to their provinance. There are limited numbers due to the limited amount found in the ship. 500 sets, 1000 coins.
Sunken treasure is more desirable I guess.

I was potentially looking in case they were worth investing in.

Having had a quick google, found the above link and am not sure it is worth it for the price that you are selling at.

Any offer I made could be interpreted as low balling, so don't want to get an infraction.

Free bump for you though

Fair enough mate
These are collectable coins, so the normal price of a sov doesn't apply. But thanks for the interest, they are beautiful and so shiny too!
As I stated in the OP, these are an investment and ideal for anyone with a spare £700 sitting in the bank earning a meagre rate of interest. I'd say that with gold as strong as it is atm, it wouldn't be a shock to see them easily beat bank interest rates. I have another set, the 'Entente cordiale' set, but I don't want to look 'trader like' and get a ban myself lol So I am waiting to sell those later.

If it helps, i'll take a nice round figure of £650 delivered. I'm not here to rip anyone off, and the coins I have for sale are a safe investment.

muutoo:
Yeah I was the same as oneeyedvic - was a potential investment, but a car bill running close to £1000 means I'm having to withdraw interest I'm afraid. Good luck with the sale though, somebody will get a decent set to start/add to a collection.
Nah, don't worry mate. I know money is tight. That is why i'm being forced to sell. Please let me state though that anyone interested in these should look upon them as an asset, or even a 'hand me down'
