O_o, that's odd maths. It's closer to 35%.

And unless anyone's got a review handy I think we have to assume samsung's power consumption figures are similarly optimistic for the ecogreen as they are for the F1, which is 7.6W in idle and 10.5W in seek: http://techreport.com/articles.x/16393/11

some more information here: http://www.quietpc.com/gb-en-gbp/pro...s/t-series-hdd

Also, from tomshardware "The 1 TB version is available with 16 MB cache or 32 MB cache (the HD102SI and HD103SI)" - so be careful which version this is.

I actually bought the WD 750GB greenpower, not necessarily for the green credentials but for the acoustics (it's silent, or near enough!). But apparently it was also (at the time) the most energy saving drive.

How does this stand on both points, thinking of getting a 2nd HDD. Either another WD Greenpower or something Samsungy

For those who weren't aware - This Drive is only 5400rpm spin speed (Most drives nowadays are 7200rpm spin speed which is generally faster)

Apparently these drives have high density which improves speed and allows them to acheive "near" 7200rpm speeds. But a 7200rpm drive that also has high density (such as the F1) would perform even faster.

You can get the F1 7200rpm 1Tb drive here for only £66.99
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/143288

...If you would rather have speed over power consumption then the F1 is well worth the extra £7 IMO

I'd really rather have the faster F1 for just a little more, but that's just me.

I think you'd be hard pushed to notice this difference in a typical desktop scenario:

HD103UJ (7200 rpm)
Average Seek time(typical) 8.9 ms
Average Latency 4.17 ms
Data Transfer Rate / Media to/from Buffer(Max.) 175 MB/sec
Data Transfer Rate / Buffer to/from Host(Max.) 300 MB/sec
Drive Ready Time(typical) 12 sec

HD103SI (5400 rpm)
Average Seek time(typical) 8.9 ms
Average Latency 5.52 ms
Data Transfer Rate / Media to/from Buffer(Max.) 166 MB/sec
Data Transfer Rate / Buffer to/from Host(Max.) 300 MB/sec
Drive Ready Time(typical) 12 sec

But remember that there are only a few situations where the sort of performance you're talking about actually matters. Transfering stuff onto or off the drive is going to be limited by the speed of USB for a lot of people, and things like loading up small programs like web browsers or playing music and video aren't affected by the transfer rate of the drive. Unless you're dealing with large files a lot (archiving, video editing, gaming) you may not notice any difference except the louder noise.

Most people buying 1TB drives are doing so for additional storage rather than because they are looking for a new main drive. As such they really won't notice the performance difference. The green drives are still much faster than torrents download, HD Video Streams or most other required uses. The benefits of a slower, cooler and more power efficient drive are going to include a longer average time to failure, something I am personally far more worried about with my 1TB of data. The cash saving on your power bill is tiny even running 24/7 at about £1.50 per year
