RAC OBD II Fault Code Reader £46.95 @ Argos

I was going to pay £60 to my local Subaru dealer to plug their machine in and tell me why I have the engine check light on my car, then I discovered this, haven't got one yet (I have one reserved for picking up today) so I can't vouch for it, but there are some good reviews on the Argos site. Plus I wouldn't expect RAC to put their name to rubbish. Hopefully this should more than pay for itself on the first use.

Use a search engine to find obdII readers, this isn't a wonderful price to be honest, most readers of this basic spec are about £40. Depending on your car you might find it more worthwhile to spend a bit more (£80 quid or so) and get one that will do airbag/srs lights, older abs systems and lets you work on those new fangled electronic parking brake cars or reset service lights etc.

I did do some searching, I found some cheaper ones on egay but they're non branded, plus with Argos at least I can take it straight back if it doesn't work on my car, or even if it does

Absolute rip off same ones on Ebay way cheaper, mine cost me £20 delivered does exactly the same but just slightly larger.

Yep it does

Costs me £20 everytime the monkey (sorry mechanic) puts it on and says , wait for it!!!!!
" WE WILL TRY THIS 1ST AS IT IS CHEAPEST" FFS
After several attempts finally fixed but such hassle.

I was looking at some of these for the girlfriends dad. He's a pretty competent DIY mechanic so would want one that will diagnose more than just engine codes like I think this one is limited to. Ideally it would need to cover a variety of cars too from v and w reg fiesta zetec and zetec-s, current model Mondeo TDCI and Alfa 147 JTDm.

I was looking at the ones on here and probably the one that does ODBII EODBII and CAN at £60ish

Most cars have a limited on-board diagnostic tool built in these days, do they not? My father's 1999 Focus does, as have all cars I've driven since. They don't pick up absolutely everything, so I suppose something like this could be useful if you have used your yearly callouts from the RAC/AA!

The ones on DX are just readers and are still limited and do just the same as the cheaper ones apart from showing live data like RPM and you dont need to look up the code in the book as it shows it to you on screen , if you want to play around with things like turning stuff on off then you are best connecting to a laptop and using software but then if you make a mistake you can knacker up your car !

Nope the dont tell you codes, a light may come up on the dash saying fault but wont tell you what it is.

My engine light comes on my Vectra every now and then saying a fault has registered and it wont go out until you take it to a dealer, but with this gadget i can now turn off the light saving a £60 charge everytime

Well the Focus has a diagnostic routine (hold the button for x time, turn ignition, release button, tunr etc) and it gives you a code that you can look up. This is how I identified that my O2 sensor downwind of the CAT had failed last year.

These gadgets are of limited use. For a similar cost you can get software plus a devise that links the car to a laptop. Try searching for ELM327 and make sure that it comes with the leads and the software disc. This set up will give you more information, has more functionality and the software can be updated.

used to use a paperclip on my old omega and vectra. push it into 2 of the pins and hey presto-free diagnostic
