EXPIRED - Apple Time Capsule 500GB £136.85 + £5.69 shipping @ Computer Warehouse

£136.85

86°

FOUND BY: ansalmo 5 months, 2 weeks ago

This is the previous-generation Time Capsule, missing out on the simultaneous dual-band wireless and guest wireless, but is otherwise the same as the current generation. The price is around £90 cheaper than the latest Time Capsule, so a significant saving. With a little bit of effort, you can swap the hard drive and hence save even more over the 1TB model (which is currently £378).

Here's the blurb:

* Automatic backup with Time Machine
Time Capsule works automatically with Time Machine in Mac OS X Leopard to create the the perfect no-hassle backup solution. There are no cables, so you can back up all the computers in your home to a central location.
* Server-grade storage
The massive 500GB server-grade hard drive gives you all the capacity and safety you need for backing up all your Macs.
* Easy wireless networking
Connect your DSL or cable modem to Time Capsule and quickly create a new wireless network or extend an existing AirPort-based network using the easy-to-use AirPort Utility for Mac and PC. (1)
Up to 5x the performance, 2x the range
Time Capsule uses next-generation 802.11n wireless technology to deliver up to five times the performance and up to twice the range of 802.11g wireless networks. (2)
* Wireless integration
Time Capsule also works great as a wireless hard drive whether you have a Mac or PC. It sets up in a snap, giving you a networked hard drive you can use for storing and sharing any kinds of files.
* Print without wires
Print documents, photos, and more from any room in the home or office to a central printer connected to Time Capsule via USB.
(See system requirements.)
* Strong security and access control
Protect yourself with the built-in firewall and industry-standard encryption technologies including WPA/WPA2 and 128-bit WEP.
* Works with iPhone, Apple TV and more
Time Capsule works flawlessly with Apple TV, iPhone, iPod touch, and all your other Wi-Fi devices that use the 802.11a/b/g and 802.11n draft 2.0 wireless standards. (2)
(1) Wireless Internet access requires a wireless-enabled computer, a base station or other access point, and Internet access; fees may apply. Some ISPs are not currently compatible with Time Capsule.
(2) Time Capsule is based on an IEEE 802.11n draft specification and is compatible with IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b, and IEEE 802.11g. Performance is based on a comparison with Apple's 802.11g products. Comparison assumes Time Capsule-based network with 802.11n-enabled computer. Speed and range will be less if an 802.11a/b/g product joins the network. Accessing the wireless network requires an AirPort or AirPort Extreme enabled computer or other Wi-Fi Certified 802.11a/b/g-enabled computer. Actual performance will vary based on range, connection rate, site conditions, size of network, and other factors. Range will vary with site conditions.

Added a direct link in the description - I must have picked Carphone Warehouse instead of Computer Warehouse when setting up the deal, and there doesn't seem to be a way to change it now Any Mod able to fix it?

Here's the direct link: http://www.computerwarehouse.co.uk/s.nl/it.A/id.407/.f

Only Apple could get away with charging such silly amounts for a 500GB external hard drive with some fancy bits. Not voting cold as it is a good price for the product, but Apple certainly know what they are doing!

It's more like a wireless n router with a built in hard drive for backing up and/or sharing files for network access. Although their price for this is normally a little over the top, good price here.

It is a router but doesn't have a modem built-in so to use it with ADSL you would need an Ethernet modem, one of the most common ones that people use is the X-Modem. but that ads another £25 to the cost. The reason I use an Apple Airport & X-Modem myself is that iChat video works on all of my computers without having to fiddle about with port forwarding. With my old wireless ADSL router I had to manually configure ports to get iChat video working and it only worked on one computer.

What does it do that isn't obvious, apart from emptying your wallet?

I have a 1TB version and its great. the 802.11n network is blisteringly fast compared to the G version I used to have, plus the integration with Time Machine is just superb. As you say, its a lot jsut for a wireless hard disc but with a router and the backup/restore from TM its very good.

That X-Modem isn't ADSL2+ compatible, so a bit limiting as BT is slowly moving over.
