Anyone know of a strong yet flexible wire/cable??

POSTED BY: welshdan 5 months, 1 week ago

I've had a bit of a dragons den idea!! For it to work, I'm going to need a really flexible (like a shoelace) yet very strong wire/cable (high temp durable, can't be cut). I've done a bit of research on the internet but I've only found something called LOLON, which is used in parachutte packs I think! This is great, but I think it can be cut. Any help will be greatly appreciated but understand if none comes as it is a bit of a wierd ask! I'd say a split of the profits for any good advice/help but I'm sure you'll be happy with rep!! Thanks in advance.....:)

p.s. it needs to be pretty thin too!

Kevlar? (or other Aramid based fibres...)

You'll find it hard to get something that 'can't be cut' at all, but weaved Kevlar (or Kevlar with other materials) is very cut resistant (used in stab vest, chainsaw gear etc).

The bamboo that bends is stronger than the oak that resists

also there was this root that Bear Grylls showed on channel 4 saturday night
somewhere up in Northern Canada

**don't use bamboo to parachute you'll never get out alive!

Thanks for that, not heard of that before. I've just done a search on it and it's a rope, yeah? Can it be cut?

I think you can get Kevlar ropes yes - should be pretty resistant to cuts but you really need to speak to a materials specialist (such as mike-bikes link!).

There's lots of other things to consider - what load is in bearing, how elastic can it be, what electrical resistance does it need and will it be crushed, scraped etc - that you will need to know to find the most appropriate material...

Interestingly, I have an idea which requires similar properties to the above, I wonder if it is the same. I never did find a product so have shelved it for now!
