Unsure on the correct "format" but would a player like this play multi item disks ?. Ie basically a data disk. I like to put things like short video clips, music and pictures and a disk now and then and would like to play them on more than just the PC/

Xvid is a primary competitor of the DivX Pro Codec (Xvid being DivX spelled backwards). Also Xvid encoded files can be written to a CD or DVD and played in a DivX compatible DVD player. However, Xvid can optionally encode video with advanced features that most DivX Certified set-top players do not support.

I have one of these in my bedroom.

Yes, plays DivX and Xvid.
It displays directory of data disks and supports subdirectories.

What it doesn't do is allow fastforward/rewind while playing DivX/Xvid, but you can use the goto function to jump.
