Energenie Standby Shutdown was £12.99, now £4.99 @ Maplin

£4.99

333°

FOUND BY: damo-mca 4 months, 4 days ago

Just spotted this device in the Belfast Maplin store. I tried it out and it works nicely with my Sony 32 inch LCD that uses 20w on standby (well initially at least). After a few minutes on standby it switched it off completely.

You can use it with extension cords as well, according to the Energenie website:

"You can use Energenie Standby Shutdown with multiple plug sockets, but note that all connected appliances will be turned off when Standby Shutdown automatically activates."

thtas not bad actually, it'd pay for itself in about 142 days if your TV was on standby all the time

The only downside is needing to turn power back on using the energenie button...........which makes the product half pointless when we can switch things on and off at the wall ourselves

I watch the telly when I go to bed and use the remote to switch to standby. Don't like to get out my bed to switch off at the wall (too tired). It wont bother me to switch back on in the morning using the energenie button.

Hot for me!

Noticed that too. Kind of put me off buying it because as you say it's just like switiching on again from the plug. Would be nice if it automatically re-stores power when you turn the appliance on again.

Maybe someone could confirm the exact behaviour when they get one!

To the OP, your tv uses 20W in standby? I thought modern tv's usually use around 2w or less. I suppose everybody should find out how much their TV's use in standby. Some people might be surprised.

That is also what I was wondering about - I still can't get over the fact that all these LCD's were churned out with no ability to be able to switch them off!

My 42" Samsung is on a big wooden stand and the wires are completely enclosed - to turn the energie switch back on I would have to pull out the TV stand

Otherwise, I would have jumped on this product - I do tend to wonder how much electricity my TV is using whilst not in use - which is about 22 hours out of every day

Basically if you put your tv on standby, it switches off the electricity to it after a few minutes. To switch it back on you do have to press the green button on the unit (next to the plug). So it's not perfect for everyone, but I suppose it means tv's etc aren't left on standby overnight.

It should be quoted in your manual and on the manufacturer website probably via PDF manuals. Manufacturers are realising that people want lower power standby modes and they are getting much better at this.

Surprisingly, my Sony Bravia 32 LCD does use 20w on standby. Amazing ,I know.
