Anyone know what I'd need to get one of these working in a Dell Studio 17 laptop? I know the sata interface isn't standard ???

Not good, not knowing what brand. Many people have had bad experiences from a particular brand that they would rather avoid.

Go to Dell's website and they'll have instructions. Usually takes less than 5 minutes to swap out hard drives on standard size laptops but it's often much worse on Netbooks or small form factor laptops.

Thanks for that, but I wanted to add it as a 2nd drive rather than replace the one that's there now, so I guess I do need a caddy and sata interface ?

Good deal if it's a WD, perhaps there is a way to find out before you buy.

are the 500gb 2.5" drives not 12mm thick therefore will not fit in most laptops... i got the hitachi one last year and had to send back cos of this problem, most 2.5" drives only 9mm thick...

Yes for that laptop you will need a kage there an adaptor for sata to "dell" attached to it. I would look to see if dell sell them seperatly via there website.

Also the adaptor for the hard drive will come if you order a replacement hard drive for a warrenty repair. You could ask enginner nicly to leave one with u if your ever getting next buisness day call out.

I really like the fact that this laptop had a secondary hard drive slot but just a shame that u need to get the adaptor for it. Needs to be that way for the way the laptop is put together.

Hope this has helped.

Totally agree I wouldn't put anything other than a wd scorpio or a seagate momentus in my laptops. If it's getting chucked in a external hdd case I dont suppose it matters.
