NHS direct are a waste of time!

POSTED BY: babybutton 4 months, 1 week ago

OMG! i am so seriously annoyed!! i'm not one of these oh no swine flu quick run to the doctors or phone an ambulance people but my daughter came out of school today complaining of a headache - she got told to just sit and rest while i made the tea, then after an hour she started sniffing and coughing mildly which by no means did i take as her having the flu or anything else but about 15 mins before bed time her temperature sky rocketed. The poor thing was bright red and her body was boiling all over. I put her to bed and tried to ring NHS direct as a temperature is blatantly a sign of something not good. Only to be met with a recording stating that they were only dealing with patients that were very unwell and flu is a mild illness that can be safely treated at home yourself and only to stay on the line if you feel seriously unwell.
I was livid - the service is there for people to get help and all of a sudden my daughters not good enough for help?? I tried to stay on the line at which point it then said sorry we can not take your call at the moment and the line went dead. I rang back 4 times to get exactly the same - they wouldn't even know if my daughter was seriously ill or not seeing as they won't even take people's calls!!! It's so not right being thrown off the phone and not even being given a chance to speak to someone before they know what's wrong - there could be people with meningitis or anything ringing them to simply get advice of what to do and they aren't taking calls!!!!! idiots - sorry about my rant but i really think it's a disgrace - i get the whole they're under a lot of calls thing but to dismiss people without even putting them through to anyone is a joke, i bet people die because of this they're there to give advice and it isn;t right nor fair for them to answer some calls and not others!

even if you get through all they will say is stay in for 2 days in bed.
as silly as it sounds, its probably the best solution. if it persists after 2 days, theyll tell you to go to your gp.

NHS=joke
they somehow managed to give my 78 year old grandma an extremely high oxygen dose, when she had one collapsed lung, which essentially overdosed her. we got an 'apology'

Ok.. -- im no doctor....

try this to start with..

http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/FluSAT/P2.htm

Flu and Swine flu checker..

IF IN DOUBT --- GO TO A&E..

I Never go to A&E (god forbid) and dislike time wasters who go there for no reason... ie a broken nail... but if you are really worried go, better to be safe with your child..

Cheers

Rick

Not good, sorry to hear about your daughter, i hope she feels well soon, what about an out of hours surgery, the nurse that takes the details can either authorise a doctors visit or more likely ask you to bring your daughter to the surgery , only thing is with so many swine flu cases now perhaps their procedures and guidelines have been changed due to the massive extra workload but at least you should get advice and get through quicker than NHS Direct.Good Luck.

Nhs Direct are seriously under pressure due the unecessary panic caused by swine flu and the 1000's of calls they are receiving each day.

Google your local NHS Trust and there will be a local emergency line number to call.

I hope you daughter is ok

i'm worried about the high temperature but after my call to the automated ignoring you machine called NHS direct - i feel like i've been given the advice to not bother anyone with it!! obviously it's not important enough for them to pick the phone up to. Before this stupid pandemic thing if a 7 year old had a high temperature, hot and cold shivers, and joint pain/lethargy they would be bothered - now it's a case of if you have anything remotely flu like a doctor wont come out tosee you and you aren't allowed to go to the doctors surgery! it's madness and i really am perplexed as to what to do! calpol is all i have and that isn't helping! If i take her to the emergency room i fear i'll just get branded as one of those scaremongers who are attention seeking and just jumping on the band wagon of swine flu - but then on the other hand my daughter is genuinely not well but i don't know to what severity and the whole "help line" thing would have been useful but now i'm just offended!

like someone said, call your local emergency line for reassurance and advice!

Do not go to A & E if she does have flu - you are likely to infect everyone in the waiting.

If its mild follow the instructions on the NHS website . If she does have swine flu they (GP)should give you a voucher for tamiflu and tell you where to collect it.

BTW its worth stocking up with paracetamol (Superdrug is probably the cheapest place -16 tablets for 16p) and kalpol for the younger children

do you have a digital thermometer?

When my daughter was diagnosed with swine flu she had temps of 39 plus. Sounds very similar to your daughter.

Give her Calpol/Caprofen and then phone your docs in the morning. Once you have explained the symptoms he should give you tamiflu, no doc wants to take the chance anymore. Its spreading like wildfire so there is a huge chance thats what she has.

Hope she feels better soon!

Try and ring your local out of hours surgery now and try and get a visit,if not i would take her straight to casualty, if you have exhausted other options. Its ok saying dont go to casualty bla bla bla but your daughter is very unwell and NHS cant be bothered to answer your call, last resort go to casualty and get her treated and diagnosed for whatever she has

unnecessary?

I worry greatly and with good reason and Im sure many other parents with children with existing problems and/or feeling sick feel it is very necessary.

if you have Calprofen/nurofen you can give her that too aswell as Calpol. if her temp goes to late 39... or 40 just take her straight to A&E. No point taking the chance, sod what anyone else thinks!
