Free Gym and Swimming - BIRMINGHAM ONLY

57°

FOUND BY: hurdy 4 months, 1 day ago

Not officially announced until Monday, but has been leaked in local press. Link to Evening Mail coverage

Every Birmingham resident will be able to use a gym and swimming pool free of charge from September under radical new plans being drawn up to get people to lose weight.

City council chiefs hope its new Be Active scheme open to people aged 17 to 59 will make people fit, not fat.

Under the £9.3 million initiative, they will get free off peak access to local authority-run pools and leisure centres.

Live in Solihull Borough Council next door so nothing for us

But when you get the Lowest metropolitan central support grant whereas birmingham gets a fortune then its expected!

starsailor that is bull****, Solihull, get a a lot, especially in proportion to its population, it is just siphoned off by the airport and certain projects. Letsjust hope that sooner rather than later birmingham airport and solihull gets absorbed by Birmingham

Unlikely to happen! and shows what people don't know about public finance

1. Birmingham Airport is a private business and any support is given by a consortium of councils including Solihull and Birmingham

2. The same applies for the NEC

3. Offical Figures ( Source DLG)

Local Authority 2009 Sub-National Population Revenue Support Grant Formula Grant
(Number of people) (£ million) (£ million)

WEST MIDLANDS
Birmingham 1,015,445 123.783 660.074
Solihull 205,083 10.100 53.858

4 times the size 12 times the RSG and 12 times the Total Grant

Hardly suprising they can spend money on this!

A lot of people in Solihull are loaded. If you look on MSN there's a crime map, Solihull is in green meaning low crime rate, and Birmingham etc is deep deep red. They need more money as the crime rate's really high, and the amount of people who are on really low wages are high too.

1. You've obviously never been to North Solihull!

2. Spend the extra money on reducing crime not gimmicks

OK fair enough dont want a forum to generate into a political debate and the point was more that if the idea generally is a sensible way forward to promote health ( like age-mobility through the bus passes for over 65s) then move it forward nationally. The original posting was more about expanding the idea rather than knocking it

They will be expanding it hopefully- they're doing it as like a test run thingy. I don't actually think I'll be eligible as I'm under Sandwell Council and not Birmingham Council, but we are all classed as Birmingham, so hopefully we all will get it- if we're eligible. You have to fit a certain criteria. It's probably those on certain benefits etc.

Not sure- most probably but I read on this website that you have to fit a certain criteria, but it didn't say what exactly.
