It's easy to forget that PCs are so powerful these days that one for the average family use - net, office, etc - can be carried out with a cheap but powerful PC from 4 years ago. A fair amount of corporate PCs are still P4 based and with a fresh XP install can do all the above with no problem. The uptake of Atom PCs shows there is a use for lower power machines still, and it makes me sad to see many capable machines thrown out or disregarded because the PC World guy says you need a dual core for simple photo editing or PC Format says it sucks if it doesn't run Crysis.
Joe Average does not need a C2D to use the net, one of these with maybe a cheap graphics card will run all that and iplayer no problem, and in these lean times we should make the most of what we have (and recycle to boot!).
