you can get a slower speed sony one for 50 quid from ebuyer, there is no difference in playback quality so no real benefit in buying a faster model, not yet anyway

the sony can't write to cd-r or dvd-r though and alot of people buying bluray readers are ripping bluray discs to their pc so the faster the better for that.

Erm.... you'll find the bottleneck will the the decoding on the pc not the copying from the disc.

The only thing that would benefit from a faster BR drive would be the PS3 as thats god slow.

im not sure what you mean by decoding on the pc, if you want to rip a bluray to your harddrive either for playing on your pc without AACS protection when using anydvd or for burning to a blank bluray disc the faster the drive the faster it will be ripped to the pc.

If you're not doing any compression, the bottleneck is with the write speed of the hard drive and the read speed of the Blu Ray drive. And the write speed of the hard drive is much faster than the read speed of thte Blu Ray drive, which becomes the bottleneck, so the faster the better.

If you're compressing, then yes, processor speed comes into it. But that's a different story...

Voted hot btw...
