Any PC Peeps out there? Got a question about graphics cards

POSTED BY: stefor 3 months, 1 week ago

Hi All

A couple of days my graphics card went pop, it was a Zotac 8600 GTS 512mb. My motherboard is the ASUS PK5-E, which is quite good, but only has the P35 chipset which is only PCI-E x16 and not PCI-E 2.0. My question to the boffins out there is, can I use a graphics card that is PCI-E 2.0 on my motherboard, as finding a good PCI-E x16 card seems to be hard. Are they backward compatible?

My aim would be to put something like GeForce 8800 or ATI 3650. I don't play games, so super speeds aren't needed. My budget is up to about £80 if anyone can recommend anything.

There isn't any real information on the ASUS website, in the mobo manual or if I try a search on Google.

Any information would be greatly received. :-)

PCIe2 card are compatible with all PCIe 16x boards so you should have no problems using a newer card,As for which card there really is no need to spend £80 if you dont play games,You really need to decide what you need it for first ?.

Thanks for your reply mate. I actually went into Micro Direct in Manchester with the manual for the Mobo and the guy behind the counter told me that the PCI-E 2.0 cards are definitely not compatible as the socket is different!! I would have thought a PCI-E socket would be the same and the cards would be baclward compatible. My mobo is only about 12 months old and found it frustrating that I couldn't find a graphics card for it, as almost everything in MD says PCI-E 2.0 and nothing else!! And, no one there could help me!!

I have a Dell 2407WFP-HC monitor, so like the resolution quiet high. Card is mostly used for watching HD movies on the PC and also I do a lot of video editing, so the card does help a bit with processing the footage with the CPU.

Any suggestions? Like I say, I've got between £80-£100 to replace it.

PCIe2 is identical to PCIE 16x but has double the bandwidth,As most cards dont use anywhere near all the bandwidth already then pCIe2 will make no difference to most people. I dont really know too much about cards for non gaming so wouldnt really like to make a recomendation,However the the HD 4670 seems to be the most powerful card that doesnt require an extra power connection so that would seem the first place to look.

The guys a tit and is totally wrong i have the king of the P35 boards the P5K Premium and i cant tell you for sure that its the same as yours all PCI-E are backwards compatible I've just upgraded my 4850 for a 4890 and both of them cards are of the 2.0 the dick head you spoke to is talking about the old PCI BUS which is still present and the new smaller express slots neither have anything to do with graphics with the standard PCI you use to be able to put old graphics cards in them but then it moved to AGP then to PCI-E 16x as both AGP and old PCI wouldn't handle the through put.

Your best choice for a graphics card at the minute it a 4870 the 512mb can be had for around £85 and is way faster than what you have it also has hdmi pass through for audio runs all game at high detail and is full HD compliant.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express

heres what looks like a DFI board which explains well the 16x are for graphics

The dick head that told you that should be fired hes thinking about a none graphics PCI-E slot thats ment for sound cards and other stuff check the picture below and go back to micro direct and ask to see the manager to discuss there staff as they dont know nothing and shouldnt be working there.

Well, thanks all, my minds at easy now! It's a bit stupid to me that nowhere on any of the cards for sale does it mention backwards compatibility, so people like me have to search around and ask questions, so not to fall into the trap that a lot of shops have of charging restocking fees if you buy the wrong item.

@tonyg1962: Your card looks interesting, but don't know whether I'd end up having to update my power supply to run it. I've got a Corsair 450W PSU, which has run my 8600gts perfect, but just your card for sale on Aria.co.uk and an answer (buy their staff) to a question on there says it really needs a 500-550W PSU.

What do you think?

a corsair 450w should be fine unless you are running a massively oveclocked quad core, Corsair are one of the best and are very stable,No pressure here to sell mine though ,

just had a read and the vx 450 puts out 33amp on the 12v+ rail which is plenty of power for a 4850 and is more than most 550w psus supply,

Stay away from Aria they are the worst company use ebuyer.Novatech or scan there support is great.Your Psu should power a 4850 or a 9800 but it would struggle with ati 4870 as it requires 2 power sources as does a nvidia 260 and up if you want a good low power card get the new ati 4770 they are around £75 and are a very fast entry card which are great for what you want to do.

Ive just looked at your board specs and its the same as my board only mines its big brother with more heat pipes and can tell you its a great board even today what i said about the 4770 is true but the real beauty is your boards crossfire so if down the line you want some more power you could add a second 4770.

Your psu is one of the best because its a premium supply it will be more than good enough to run most cards mentioned but it will depend on what else is being powered.
