Maybe a silly question, but I don't know the answer so here goes:
I mainly use my 360 to watch my media. Does this product upscale on the go or do you have to convert the files to be 1080p?

Just wondering if it has much of an advantage of using one of these over my 360?

This does indeed upscale.

The main advantage of this device is the file format compatablilty. It plays pretty much any media file you throw at it yet it's small enough not to fit in to your av set up.

Heat op.

Can you just stream directly to the device remotely from say a PC, or does it have to have a directly connected external USB HDD?

Thanks for that, had no issues with file compatibility with the 360 so no need to spend any more than I already am!!
I know I'd end up buying a new hard disk too if I got this. I'm fighting the urges.

I don't need it!!

You can stream if you use a USB Network adaptor and install custom firmware

It's worth noting that this product has numerous custom firmwares about. There are surely at least a dozen threads on this product with a wealth of information on this product by now - I would hazard that most questions have been answered already, so worth a look.

Ignore the fanboy comments that will crop up ...

This won't play back the sound of the newest WMV files that a lot of Xbox 360 folk like to use. Video is fine, but no audio - you would need to remux the sound. Have a read of the full specs before jumping in head-first.

It's been for this price for a while but good reminder. The feedback I've read was mainly positive. You could use a notebook computer (with HDMI out) connected directly to your tv to get the same result, but achieve better file compatibility (and upgradeability) for your movie files. Let's face it, there are so many different file formats around and new comming out, it would be easier to keep updated with a notbook.

Sorry but a Netbook would seriously struggle with 1080p MKV's.

If your planning on streaming then by the time you've added custom firware and shelled out for a compatible USB NIC you would probably be as well to just buy an Xtreamer

He's talking about notebooks not netbooks which is perfectly reasonable. Even the integrated HD3200 chipset from ATi can handle blu ray /1080p etc..

Typical netbooks cannot handle this but nvidia ION based laptops with the 9400 chipset can handle it too, which is why ION based Nettops (HTPC's) are probably going to make items like the WD TV a bit redundant.

Sorry to ask, but any chance you could point me in the direction of some of the custom firmware?

I've had one of these for 8 months and haven't bothered to set it up yet!

Is there any huge benifit over buying one of those £24.99 HDMI 1080p upscale media players I've seen, there was a post on here the other day for one at eBuyer which looks good.

Just connect your USB HDD/Card/Stick and it plays it and even plays ISO files which I think is great news???
